Drinks & Nightlife

This is really cool place. Tucked away in one of the oldest buildings in Falmouth, this funky bar has a really good selection of craft beers, lots of classic pinball machines (free to use) and, randomly, a bookshop inside!

This really cool bar, right on Custom House Quay, undoubtedly has some stories to tell. A little rough around the edges and attracting an eclectic range of drinkers, the bar has bags of character and a massive selection of cask beers and ciders and often has live music in the evening. Something you really should do is grab yourself some fish and chips from the (award winning) Harbour Lights chippie - directly above the bar, and sit down (you won't be alone) and eat your chips out of the box with a good beer! The route here from the house is pretty easy, but there are a number of different ways you can go, so have a look on google maps. I reckon its about 12 minutes from the house.

A characterful little locals' pub. Perhaps not an ultimate destination, but a good spot for refreshment having conquered the notorious Jacobs Ladder stairs, which are your most efficient route to the northern end of the Falmouth town centre.

Food Scene

This a cool cafe, 5 minutes walk from the house. Its a trendy place in a nice setting with some good food and drinks. Update: Apparently it only does takeaway these days, still worth a look though.

This is somewhere I would definitely recommend for a drink, but the food is pretty good too. It was originally a pub, but its now more more food orientated, although they would welcome your business (and give you a prime table) outside of meal times. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but like most places with a west facing shop front along Falmouth's high street (including even the post office and Marks & Spencer!) it boasts sensational views of the Carrick Roads estuary. For me, the main courses don't justify their price tag, but for a small snack and/or drink, this place is well worth a visit.

This is my favourite restaurant in Falmouth, but it may not to everyones' taste. Its a quirky little cash only place, right on the water (although no sea view though), that only serves a limited range of sea food. Basically, its just crabs. mussels, prawns and oysters. Oh, and chips. Its a lovely place and the staff there are super friendly. Its only open a few nights a week and is usually booked up a good few months in advance, so if you fancy trying it out, call them to reserve way in advance of your trip. You'll probably have to leave a message, but they're really good at calling back.

This is a cool place that I'm also going to try to include under "bars" as holds it own under either category. Its a great bar/restaurant in a prime spot on Gyllyngvase Beach (which is your nearest beach to the house). Its not groundbreaking in terms of food or drink - its a good fish and chips and they have some other fairly contemporary modern European dishes on offer, but the quality is pretty good. There are no keg beer options, but they (unusually) have a keg version of St Austell Tribute on offer and also St Austell Korev, which is a decent local lager. I'm rambling now, so I'll cut to the chase - THE VIEW IS AMAZING! Just make sure you get a table overlooking Falmouth bay!

Rick Stein does seem to be a rather ubiquitous brand these days - particularly in Cornwall, but if you can get past that, this restaurant is actually pretty good. Despite any preconceptions you might have, this place isn't fancy or pretentious, and if you rock up for lunch you can eat really well, in a nice setting, for a really good price. The fish and chips here is (in my opinion) the best in Falmouth. You can get takeaway or eat in. Price - average.

This is essentially a pub, but its food orientated. Its an amazing spot with lovely river views and well worth a visit. Definitely come here for drink and a snack, but I think the main courses are overpriced for what they are and that's where you'll pay a premium for this amazing location. Don't get me wrong, the food is ok, but if you want to spend upwards of £15 for a main course at luchtime, you could do considerably better in Falmouth. Don't let me put you off though, this is a great place to have a pint and a bowl of chips!

Essentials

A basic little shop with a surprising range of pot noodles and similar foods (thanks to the large student population in the area). This is just a few minutes walk from the house and great for picking up some emergency milk/wine/beer.

This is your nearest mini-supermarket. You won't get anything too exciting here, but its a decent sized mini-tesco, so you get anything you need here for a short trip. If you want somewhere bigger, hit Sainsburys or Asda (a drive away). If you want organic, you'll need to go to Waitrose in Truro.
