Food Scene

Good for: Eat-in or take-away coffee, and a quick chat. Why we love it: This is our favourite coffee joint whether we’re running to the train or sitting at the front tables people watching. It’s just across the road from our house and has lovely staff. The menu is fairly small, it’s not really the place you’d settle in for a long brunch. Recommendations: The croissants are aesthetically beautiful, and the lemon curd almond cake is a decadent breakfast delight. Price: Expect to pay about $4.50 for a soy latte

Good for: Coffee and dawgs. Why we love it: Good banter, cheaper coffee, close by, and although we’re not hat wearers, it’s got an impressive wall of them. Recommendations: The coffee Price: $3 for a coffee if you bring a Keep Cup. And it’s good coffee, too!

Good for: Unpredictable breakfast menu options, decor and art envy. Why we love it: While most other brunch places serve the standard BLAT or hollandaise eggs, this place gives you ‘French Corsette - French toast with poached cinnamon pears, crusted pistachios, fresh pomegranate and salted caramel greek yogurt gelato’. This place is pretty high on the hipster scale, but it’s worth it. The inside is very mix and match with an eighties sci-fi bent, and you’ll get some deep house with your breakfast. Vines crawl across the ceiling and large-scale artworks sit proudly on the walls making you reconsider your own decor choices. Recommendations: Anything. Take a risk, try something different.

Good for: Solid menu, and you’ll always get a table. Why we love it: This makes for a great recovery breakfast in a cozy, homely space, and you’ll almost always get a table without waiting. If you’re dining with friends grab the nook above the stairs, otherwise head for a spot by the upstairs windows. Recommendations: Their freshly baked ricotta and strawberry muffins are brilliant. The potato stack is crispy, salty and everything that your hangover needs on a day like today. Price: You could get away with a meal and a coffee for around $20.

Good for: Unpredictable menu options, vegetarian menu that you wouldn’t notice is vegetarian Why we love it: This is a bit of a ride away, but great if you’re happy to explore, and we think totally worth it. Everything on the Mediterranean-influenced vegetarian menu is made from scratch from local, organic produce. It has a community vibe but polish and purpose in everything. It also makes house-made doughnuts daily, cakes and muffins, two seasonal salads and two sandwiches if you’re looking for takeaways to enjoy at the park. We love the breakfast bowl with sweet potato purée, heirloom tomato, moghrabieh and sprout slaw with tahini dressing, avo, green tomato relish and poached dukkah eggs!

Good for: That paddock to plate feel Why we love it: This has the vibe of eating at a farmer’s market, except that it’s housed in a chic warehouse. With a daily changing menu and strategically placed eggplants gracing wooden tables, this is a bustling place for breakie. Recommendations: The freshly baked cookies

You’ll find a long line of tourists snaking out the front of Black Star - they’re lining up for the Lonely Planet favourite, the watermelon cake. We find it a little overwhelming to be honest because a) the wait is often too long, and b) people mainly go there to Instagram their cake which makes for an awkward social vibe, c) the bakery changed staff in the last year and can it can be fairly unpredictable. But if you’ve got a spare 40 mins to wait in the line, or by some miracle there isn’t one, go for the pork sausage rolls rather than the cake. They’re mouthwatering!

Good for: Great Banh Mi Why we love it: walk around the corner and you’ll smell the treats Great Aunty Three is cooking up. It’s fragrant, flavoursome, and pretty cheap. Recommendations: The pork and green apple rice paper rolls are pretty grand, but so are the banh mi and soups. Price: You can get a feed here for $10 or less.

Good for: A cheap dinner with a fun and energetic atmosphere Why we love it: This is a family run Turkish joint that's been going for decades now. It’s pretty low-key (you’ll notice the back patio is on a slightly awkward slant) but the food is great, it’s well priced, the staff are delightful, and it always makes for a fun dinner on any night from Wednesday through Saturday (the other nights are more subdued). The whole restaurant will break into song when a birthday cake comes out which is delightful. Recommendations: Call ahead! It’s a tough one to get a table at otherwise. We always prefer sitting outside. This place is cash only, and BYO. It’s also pretty loud - bring your outside voice

Good for: Amazing vegan and gluten-free pizza. The fried chicken is great, but the wraps are the cheap, unsung hero. Why we love it: Manoosh has the best pizzas in town - they’re not Italian, but they have brilliant options. Order takeaway - delivery if you feeling really lazy - as the actual restaurant is more like a dinner, and is often full of happy boozy people ending their night on a high note. The vegan pizza would stand up for well to most anti-vegan pizza devotees. Recommendations: Anything and everything - follow your heart.

Good for: Gelato, instagram porn (@GelatoMessina), minimal tech, and Ibiza house at all times Why we love it: You may have noticed there’s an internationally awarded gelateria one block up, Cow & Moon. We don’t really recommend it, firstly, because we are loyal to Sydney institution, Gelato Messina, and secondly, because it’s not that great. Gelato Messina consistently ups the ante with its flavours, often inspired by pop culture trends. Their marketing is such that a single instagram post can send Clint careening down the street to grab a litre of coconut gelato with mango ribbon and pandan jelly cubes. Choose from the specials board! Don't come for vanilla! And get a taster platter!

Good for: Whole-heartedly vegan gelato. And it’s damn good. Why we love it: As we said, we’re loyal to Messina, but Gelato Blue certainly works magic with coconut cream here. Since this joint went 100% vegan last year, the spread of flavours has been off the charts. Recommendations: The Sundae. All day, every day.

Another special treat - all the way from New Zealand. Nab an intimate spot along the wall, flirt with the waiter, enjoy the slow roasted meats and splurge on that bottle of wine. You won't regret paying a bit extra here. Bring three friends and give over responsibility of ordering to the chef. They're the expert, after all. Also, get the green beans with almonds. They're not a focal dish, but they're delish.

Good for: Doing unintentional charity work by enjoying a good meal Why we love it: Lentil’s is a not for profit and aims to put all its profits back into the community. It’s vegetarian food has an Indian bent, and the experience is pay-as-you-feel where “customers give what they feel the food is worth and have the opportunity to contribute towards a world where respect, generosity, trust, equality, freedom and kindness rule.” All the staff are volunteers (remember this), the daily changing vegetarian menu is homely, and it’s always packed. A bit of an experience. Recommendations: try and nab a seat along the front Price: The recommended donation is $20 as it covers their costs.

Drinks & Nightlife

Good for: A cocktail to start off a special evening. Why we love it: From the outside, Earl’s Juke Joint looks no different to Betta Meats, the business it took over in 2013. But the security guard out front is a pretty good hint. Behind this cheeky façade, a rollicking bar honours the juke joints of the Deep South – informal and rustic, with a little bit of loud music for dancing well into the night. While they’re pricey, people come for the cocktails, including the Bacon-Infused Old Fashion. Recommendations: Great place to splurge on a cocktail before heading to Blood Wood or The Bach Eatery

Good for: dark corners, juicy burgers and fried chicken, putting your credit card behind the bar to drink whisky all night and forgetting about the consequences Why we love it: This is a grungy bar converted from an old church. It’s dark and moody, there’s usually hard rock and heavy metal playing just a little bit too loud, and yet the crowd is made up of everyone. Recommendations: The mushroom burger is amazing. The fried chicken, also brilliant.
