from ZAGAT... “Bohemian” digs with mismatched seating and an “ample patio” mark this “adorable”, “date”-ready wine bar in a “trendy part” of Montrose; with “good pricing” on an “extensive” vino list and popular drinks (“love the frozen mojitos”), it's a “cool place” to “sit back and chill.”

from Houston Press... Home for mid-level national touring acts, mostly rock and country artists either on the rise or past their commercial heyday, the Revention Music Center can accommodate a mosh pit one night and cabaret seating the next. With excellent sound, sight lines and -- most important -- easy-access restrooms, you can fill your bladder on overly priced beer and empty it while missing only a couple of choruses.

from ZAGAT... “Arrive early” and “be prepared to wait” at this “swanky” Montrose bar where crowds of “actual grown-ups” flock nightly for “expertly crafted” “Prohibition-era cocktails”, cheese and charcuterie in a “tastefully” decorated space (think exposed brick, dark wood and leather); sure, prices run “a bit high”, but that's to be expected when “talented” bartenders put so much “care into the creation” of each drink.

from ZAGAT - Why it’s hot: Suds enthusiasts won't be disappointed by the comprehensive list of American (like the Houston-brewed Saint Arnold Lawnmower) and global beers (Fram-Bosa Belgian, Kaliber BTL) at the Downtown brewhouse. The crowd is bustling after the work bell rings and also on theme nights. Number of beers on tap: 86 What to eat: Corn dog trio with three hand-battered beer bratwursts and spicy mustard or a pick-your-pie pizza with fresh herb tomato sauce and three toppings.

from ZAGAT - Championing the metaphor of craft beer (mongoose) triumphing over bigger beer brands (cobra), this Midtown bar with myriad taps and a knack for cocktails attracts an educated crowd that appreciates things like hop subtleties, Fernet on draft and upscale snacks to accompany; its modern interior marries brick, wood and metal, with vine-covered walls and monthly poetry readings softening its machismo.

from Houston Press - Where else in Houston could you see Valient Thorr, eat a near-orgasmic cheeseburger (seriously, it's kinda sexy), watch the Rockets on the tube and play a game of drunkenly dangerous darts all in the same night? Rudyard's, that's where! Located just off Waugh in the Montrose and amidst town homes and sketchy backstreets, its charm isn't manufactured or pre-packaged like all the other corporate "pubs" in town. Rudz is a product of its environment through and through, populated by our city's own indie musicians and artists. The beer menu is lively and always changing, so be sure to stop by frequently to taste some of the state's best micro-brews. Also, the bathroom wall graffiti is the best in town. The above-average bar food is popular.

from ZAGAT - Why it’s hot: The cozy Rice Village bar slings a huge variety of brews — available by the bottle or on tap — and a short, delicious menu of bar bites. Indoor seats can be hard to come by, but the crowd of regulars knows there's lots of room outside, thanks to a small front patio and an even larger covered one out back. Number of beers on tap: 50+ What to eat: Basil pesto flatbread with roasted chicken --- from their website... The Houston Ginger Man is the oldest of our pubs, and has been serving fine beer since 1985. Nestled in Rice Village, close to Rice University, the Texas Medical Center, and the West University neighborhood sits a home taken out of a literary novel. Shaded by leafy, deep-rooted trees and foliage, the pub itself tells a story as well as the beloved regulars for nearly three decades. from HoustonPress - Millions of scenes ago, AvantGarden was called the Mausoleum, and then the converted house went through a variety of structural and aesthetic changes to become the folkie playground it is today. Local singer-songwriters' acoustic jangle routinely packs the house as listeners sip Shiners, Merlot or the venue's trademark fruit-infused homemade concoctions. (Try the sangria.) Many of Houston's best-known troubadors count AvantGarden as the first venue they ever played in front of a large audience, either in the upstairs performance space or downstairs among the fireplace, mirrored walls and European-style divans. Something interesting, if not downright captivating, is happening here most nights of the week - regular tango, jazz, and open-mike nights (both music and comedy), to name just a few.

from HoustonPress - Griff's, a very neighborhood-oriented sports bar, serves standard, artery-clogging bar food all day up until closing time. The interior is comfortable and worn - read: this falls on the dive side of the dive-fancy spectrum, in a good way - and the patio is spacious. Friday and Saturday nights bring dollar Lone Stars and a DJ-fueled party atmosphere, but most other times you can enjoy a reasonably peaceful bite in a 45-year-old bar. Tuesday is steak night and Wednesday brings pork chops, both for around ten bucks.

from ZAGAT - Why it’s hot: The craft-beer-centric Montrose-area bar takes both its beer and its food seriously: James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Shepherd (Underbelly) is behind the eats. Number of beers on tap: 80+ What to eat: We favor the chicken wings, Cease and Desist Burger (double the meat, double the cheese) and brunch-only katsudon, a hearty rice bowl topped with a crispy pork cutlet, miso corn, pickled cucumber and eggs.

The bakery doles out daily made bread, donuts and pastries, while a living room–style dining room, warm with fabric sofas and shag carpeting, serves seasonal American cuisine. Chef Justin Yu joined forces with his pastry chef wife, Karen Man, to create a restaurant that's wholly Houston except for one notable thing: Instead of sprawl, the tiny Oxheart seats only 30 people. Yu and Man highlight locally grown produce and locally raised meats on their veggie-heavy menus, which change from week to week. Three different chef's tasting menus are available at night, priced from two affordable four-course menus to a more extravagant affair with seven courses. All three tasting menus are available with wine pairings, which are as joyfully unusual as the food: a sweet Blandy's Sercial Madeira paired with a dusky, savory sunflower seed soup, for example, or Kalin Cellars Semillon drunk with a rabbit saddle cooked with green garlic ash. Oxheart is one of the restaurants chiefly responsible for bringing waves of national attention to Houston's current dining scene, which is all the more satisfying given the restaurant's entirely humble setting and cozy appeal.

from HoustonPress - Chef David Luna's modern Texas fare at Line & Lariat showcases the best the Lone Star State has to offer, from surf to turf. Try the Gulf-caught red snapper or cobia for lighter fare that doesn't skimp on flavor, or go whole hog with an antelope steak or mustard-roasted wild boar chop. You'll find everything from German and Mexican to cowboy and Cajun influences on the menu, which ranges from pulled pork tostadas (which make a great bar snack with a pint of locally brewed beer) to filé gumbo filled with Gulf shrimp and local chicken — all of it served in a converted two-story bank lobby that's simply the most stunning dining room downtown.

The Cistern at Buffalo Bayou Park is a former drinking water reservoir built in 1926 for the City of Houston. As one of the city’s early underground reservoirs, it supported the municipal water system’s goals of fire suppression (water pressure) and drinking water storage. After operating for decades, an irreparable leak was discovered and after a few years, the reservoir was decommissioned in 2007. In 2010, the City of Houston was sourcing vendors to demolish the Cistern. At the same time, Buffalo Bayou Partnership was developing the $58 million Buffalo Bayou Park project and “discovered” the site. Realizing its historical and architectural significance, Buffalo Bayou Partnership with the City of Houston worked to take over development and maintenance of the space. The organization subsequently secured grants of over $1.7 million from The Brown Foundation, Inc. to bring the space up to code, make it accessible to the public, and initiate plans for a public art program for the space. Page architects was charged with designing improvements to the Cistern including an accessible walkway with guardrails, interior lighting, emergency exits and safety measures as well as the curving entry tunnel to transition visitors from the outside world.

The Menil Collection is an art museum located in Houston, Texas, USA, in a 30-acre neighborhood of art. The main building houses special exhibitions and the permanent collection, and it anchors a campus with three other museum buildings: two are dedicated to single artists (Cy Twombly and Dan Flavin) and another to year-long installation projects; a fourth building is under construction for a drawing institute. Known for displays that allow the objects and works of art to speak for themselves—there are no “didactics” on the wall or media in the galleries—the Menil philosophy is to foster each individual’s direct, personal encounter with works of art. The display of carefully chosen artworks in sympathetic settings are Menil hallmarks.

from Houston Chronicle... A visit to the mini-mart typically involves picking up a new lighter and a few tallboys for your beer picnic. Not so at D&Q Mini-Mart, because it's not your typical convenience store. Otherwise known as the Beer Station, this average looking shop on the shabbier edges of Montrose just so happens to be one of the top spots in Houston for beer selection. Instead of snagging a case of the Champagne of Beers on the way to a game of flip cup, customers come in to peruse the limited edition bottles from craft breweries all over the U.S. and abroad. An entire shelf is dedicated to Belgian beers, including La Fin Du Monde and Delirium Tremens, and right next to that is an incredible collection of glassware. Everyone knows that drinking is more fun when it's done out of oversize steins. Local beers from Katy's own No Label are on tap for growler fills and the section below the gurgling fish tank is for new releases. If you're desperate for Saint Arnold's latest experiment, it's likely available here.
