Take the ferry from Ardrossan, just a 45 minute drive from Doonbank. An incredibly pretty island with lots to visit - from walking up Goats Fell, to whisky tours. A really nice day out.

Lovely grounds and garden with free entry. Restored by Prince Charles. The house is amazing, but you do need to book your tour in advance and it costs about £10 per person - but well worth it. Great tea room and dogs welcome but they must be kept on a lead.
