Guidebook for Providence

Restaurants
Most of these recommendations are for restaurants that I like to frequent but recently I have decided to include reviews from the Providence Journal and other local publications that I would love to try. If you visit one of these restaurants, please let me know how it stacked up against the review. Thanks! Margaret!
When I am in Newport, this is where I want to eat. Very creative, delicious menu. Their bourban with mint cocktail convinced me that this beverage was worth trying again!

Super polenta and greek salad, just to mention two of my favorites. Rosalina interprets the Italian tradition to the max!

They make the best italian grinders, and their prepared food is great. Tony's Colonial has been around since I was a child growing up in an Italian-American family where the food traditions are legendary. Located on Atwells Avenue and therefore just a mile or so from my listings. If you are in town for business or training, and want to pick up something ethnic for dinner, try Tony's. They have many delicious home cooked selections.

Ogie's opened in the winter of 2015. There was a cover story in Rhode Island Monthly magazine which piqued my interest particularly because I was shopping around for the perfect venue for a party to celebrate the marriage of my son and his fiance. I knew they would love the decor - a fabulous 50's style bar stunning light fixtures and great drinks. Then there is the trailer park decor and food. I know it sounds like an odd combination but the combination makes for a stimulating and savory experience!!!

Federal Hill on Atwells Avenue used to be exclusively the home of Italian Restaurants and food shops. That is still very true, but many restaurants have opened there that feature other cuisines. I recommend it for a first night in RI because - weather permitting - you can walk up and down Atwells Avenue, reviewing the menus and then decide where you would like to eat. It is a great introduction to the truly outstanding food culture of Providence. Some highlights: Venda Ravioli is a busy place where you can make your selections from prepared dishes and then take them to one of the tables situated around the room for dining. In the summer there is outside seating which service. I haven't been to the Oyster bar for years but it is still around which probably means that the food is still excellent.

Julian's has been around for a long time and it is usually very busy. Their Sunday brunch is well known. They have daily specials that can be quirky, but I have never found my choices to be anything but delicious. So if you are even slightly adventurous, I would definitely give it a try.

I had read good things about Soban but never had a chance to try it out. Then one of my repeat customers, a Korean student from Johnson and Wales and I were talking about his dinner and lo and behold he had ordered take out from Soban, a place he frequents and highly recommends. He was enthusiastic about these dishes: Bibimbap, rice with vegetables and spicy sauce; Kimchi Stew, and Soft Tofu Stew. I can't wait to ask a friend to join me there soon!

A review of this restaurant appeared in the Providence Journal on Wednesday July 24, 2019 as Providence's newest ramen spot with a playful vibe. The review talks about their beautiful renovation of a restaurant that is located in what locals call the Biltmore garage. (Fijidini, another recommend in my guidebook is also located there) The restaurant seats 30 many at communal tables. The review describes "meat or veggie noodle bowls, chilled sake in kitty condiment pots and a wall of anime and cartoon characters." The owners were among the first to intro Ramen to the city. The food looks delicious and the restaurant decor intriguing. Got to go!Tori Tomo won an award for Commercial Interior Design. Got to go! I finally got to go this past January. I had Tomato Ramen and shared the Taho Yaki side plate. Everything was very delicious. My dining companion thought the atmospphere was a bit cold not in temperature, but in atmosphere. I wasn't as bothered by it, but there is a case to be made. I would return any time.

Wonderful Thai restaurant in Pawtuxet 3.5 miles south on Broad Street. The food has always been fresh and delicious. There is a sweet little balcony that is the best place to share a meal with someone special.

This restaurant is in the heart of downtown. It has an unusual décor but enjoyable just the same and the steak was delicious. We did not try the sushi; maybe next time.

This "tasting room" is a relatively new addition to Providence's Night Life, opening just this past March. I was aware and hoped to get there with a friend sometime soon. Luckily the Providence Journal has published a review in today's paper and my interest in checking it out has intensified. You can sample their organic and gluten free Gin, Vodka, and Limoncello in addition to selections from their Creative Cocktail Menu all of which sound very intrigueing and have gone right to the top of my "must try" list. Should it be the Coffee Milk, Rhode Island Iced Tea, or the Barden Harvest. Each of these offerings contain local ingredients hand crafted or foraged. From the photo, the decor looks relaxing and lovely.

Parks & Nature
My connection with Blithewold is longstanding. Very beautiful gardens that inspire reflection and appreciation for those who can and do create such a landscape. For a special retreat, immerse yourself in the bamboo grove where two lovely wooden benches allow you to sit, linger, and worship nature.

An older friend told me about his experience as a child when he and his family lived in a flat in the Elmwood section of Providence . Temperature permitting, he and his family after walking to the park with their ice skates, would upon arriving put them on and skate to the boat house on the frozen ponds where warm refreshments and simple foods were available for purchase. The park has historic architecture and natural surroundings that are perfect for a picnic, a stroll, or i run.

It's on Benefit Street, one of the most beautiful streets in Providence. If you love libraries like our forebears in Rhode Island obviously did, then this is a must see. It acts like a public library even though not one and welcomes visitors. If you are a library lover, Rhode Island is a gem. Must see The Sayles Public Library at 13 Summer Street in Pawtucket.

When I moved to my home shortly after 9/11 as a tenant, this beautiful building greeted me each day at the beginning of my morning commute. Rhode Island has a fine architectural tradition, like the recently renovated Tudor style building in Westerly which was built adjacent to Wilcox Park, The Pawtuckey Public Library’s front door is an exact replica of the Erechtheion, in Greece, the Redwood library in Newport designed by Peter Harrison who also designed Truro synagogue and the Brick Market In that same city. I am constantly amazed by the civic virtue and pride that is the source of this architectural history that enriches our lives to this day. Eat your heart out World Wide Web.

Garden City is probably the premier shopping area in the greater Providence area. It is not a mall but has many of the clothing and household chains. Free Parking. Music events in the summer. Whole foods is nearby, so if you want to purchase groceries and do some shopping, this might be the direction to go in.
