Parks & Nature
This requires a 60km drive, and can be a challenging hike, but for anybody interested in some gorgeous natural scenery away from the beach, this is a day trip worth making. On the way there and back, you will pass various attractions such as the Baan Silapin artists' colony.

Arts & Culture
This is a beautiful example of traditional Thai architecture, so light and airy, a royal retreat from Bangkok's heat from the days before air conditioning. There are fascinating exhibits on the history of the royal family and Thai traditions, and the tour guides are all so well-informed. There are also some living, active parts of the palace property, including a military base and a renewable energy project sponsored by the crown princess, who favors such research. You can learn so much more about Thai culture here than in a whirlwind tour of the major sites in Bangkok!

Maybe the best short hike from our place. There is a giant standing Buddha you can see from all the way up the beach. Climb the stairs up the side of the mountain next to the Buddha, taking plenty of breaks to catch your breath and admire the view, and at the top there is a temple with stray cats and aggressive monkeys ready to steal anything you're not holding on to tightly. There are vendors selling food for the monkeys, as well as cheap pearls, but be careful if you offer food, the monkeys will all mob you at once! Also right next to our favorite restaurant, La Mer.

Sightseeing
This is a "retro" or "vintage" mall, there is of course an opportunity to shop here, mostly for small souvenirs, but it's a fascinating experience, set up to make you feel like you are walking up and down a Thai street of about 40-50 years ago, complete with vintage cars and even souvenirs. Especially fun for small kids, and for my mom, who hadn't been to Thailand in 40 years!

Shopping
This is more than just shopping! This is more than just a night market... which by itself is an experience if you haven't been to an Asian night market yet. This is a weekend-only night market that specializes in art and unique handmade souvenirs you won't find elsewhere, from crafts and fun "found" art to gallery quality paintings, and it's always fun to wander around, eat some street food from the various vendors' carts, and pick out something to put up on the wall back home to remind yourself of the vacation of a lifetime!

Food Scene
This is our favorite place to eat close to home; always family friendly, some unique dishes, always fresh seafood, and some really spectacular views up the beach toward central Hua Hin. The map location is a little off: it's actually all the way out on the point of land, at the bottom of the hill called Khao Takiab.

Drinks & Nightlife
The Hilton is more or less at the heart of central Hua Hin, all the small side streets around there are packed with bars, clubs, even a muay thai ring. During the day there is some pretty good shopping at foreign language bookstores, souvenir vendors along the way to the municipal beach, and grilled squid and other street food. Day or night, pretty much any service you need in Hua Hin will be available somewhere in this area. You will not find a lot of go-go bars in Hua Hin, since it is traditionally one of the king's favorite places to visit, and out of respect for him, the city has a law against them.
