The Crypt of St. Leonard's Church in Hythe contains one of only two ossuaries in the UK. It holds over 2,000 skulls arranged neatly along the walls and 8,000 bones in a huge pile stacked almost to the ceiling. Seeing so many skulls in one go makes them less of a sinister object and more of an anthropological souvenir. Oak Walk, Hythe CT21 5DN, England

The castle was probably erected on a Roman site, though Bronze Age implements and copper ingots discovered in Hayne's Wood, 1874, show the site had already long been inhabited. Saltwood Castle was the much loved home of the military historian and diarist, the late Rt. Hon. Alan Clark MP. The grounds of Saltwood Castle are not normally open to the public but a few times a year there is a rare chance to see this romantic, medieval castle. There is a moat, battlements, a secret garden, peacocks, and this year you can view the Rt. Hon Alan Clark’s classic cars. http://www.saltwoodcastle.com/

The flat, mainly sandy beach at Dymchurch stretches for approximately 3 miles. The beach is backed by the new, improved sea wall. It is wide enough to allow pedestrians to walk all along the beach between Hythe Military Rifle Range, to St Mary’s Bay. Care needs to be taken as the sea wall, although very wide, can get quite slippery when wet. There is plenty for families with young children to do in the area. Donkey rides are organised on Dymchurch Beach in the holiday season and Dymchurch has an amusement park and a variety of resort facilities, without the village being too commercialised. https://www.thebeachguide.co.uk/south-east-england/kent/dymchurch.htm
