Just 15 minutes by car will take you to the delightful village of Dornoch. A lovely spot to wander around and take in the small shops, boutiques and eateries. However, our ‘must see’ spots are Dornoch Beach - Dornoch beach is a beautiful expanse of golden sand located on the tranquil Dornoch Firth. Miles of golden sand stretch from Dornoch Point heading past Embo beach to the mouth of Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve. This fine long beach has been given a Seaside Award status as a clean bathing beach. At the beach you will find The Highland Larder, an outdoor kiosk serving fresh seafood. Open 7 days unless they run out of fish over the weekend in which case they close on Mondays as the boat doesn’t land until Monday evening with fresh supplies. Royal Dornoch Golf Course – keen golfers will know Royal Dornoch as the third best course in the UK and ranked number 10 in the WORLD. A real bucket list course for any golfer, those of you less interested in the sport will still enjoy the walk between the course and the beach. There is also the second course, The Struie, which is less challenging and ideal for a higher handicap or holiday golfer. Also, considerably less expensive. The nearby courses of Tain and Brora offer a fun wee test too. royaldornoch

Cromarty is a lovely wee town on the Black Isle that is best accessed by taking the Nigg-Cromarty ferry. Travel from Edderton to Nigg by car in 20 minutes. This tiny ferry shuttles the short distance between Nigg and Cromarty throughout the summer months. From the ferry keep your eyes peeled for bottlenose dolphins, grey seals and occasionally a minke whale! When in Cromarty, there are some charming shops and museums in the village but we always visit Sutor Creek Café, which provides wonderful wood-fired pizzas and local fare, open Wednesday to Sunday. Check out www.ecoventures.co.uk who offer wildlife watching from their RIB.

Tain has all the local amenities such as supermarkets, doctor, banks etc. It also hosts bi-weekly farmers markets and a museum ‘Tain through Time’. The golf course is well worth playing and ‘Greens’ restaurant on the High Street is one of our favourite eateries.

Just a 10 min stroll from the house down the hill and into the village, you will find one of the finest examples of highland malt whiskey, Balblair. Perhaps less well known than its neighbour Glenmorangie, it is my view that it far exceeds in terms of flavour, history and charm. Balblair distillery was also the setting for Ken Loach’s film The Angel’s Share. Tours with tastings are available but allow yourself twice as long for the walk back than the walk there!

30mins from Edderton Perched on a high terrace above walled gardens, Dunrobin Castle, with fairytale spires and turrets, rises above the North Sea like an illustration from a storybook. Towering over both the Castle and Golspie is the Sutherland Monument atop Ben Bhraggie. The 1st Duke of Sutherland looks forever out over his former home from the heather-covered hilltop. Falconry displays will be daily at 11.30 & 14.30 from 1st April until the 31st October.
