Gorgeous local spot on the water, just a 3-minute drive from the house. Great food and drinks. Sundays (only) they have an excellent brunch. Say yes to the brioche donuts to start! Reservations an absolute must in summer.

A Portland legend. The lobster stew and brown butter lobster roll are tasty, more modern takes on classic New England seafood. Takeout is possible, and at times delivery is available through apps like Doordash.

Small plates bursting with Maine-meets-Mediterranean flavor! Amazing cocktails. This is my favorite restaurant in Portland. I'm obsessed with the Skordalia, either as a separate spread or incorporated to elevate any dish it's used in to the highest flavor heights. The chef/owner, Matt Ginn, won Chopped twice, and happens to be our neighbor's son-in-law.

Duck fat-fried frites and legendary poutine. The paninis, salads, and famous tomato-fennel soup are all fantastic, too. For dessert, the donut holes (also fried in duck fat) are incredible. Well-known and well-loved, so expect waits in the summer. Duckfat Frites Shack - a more casual outdoor venue off Washington Ave - is equally awesome and has essentially the same menu.

Local Fare with Local Flair

Beloved by many, and just down the road here in Falmouth Foreside, is a charming general store and market with interesting food and wine items on offer, including gifts. They offer made-to-order sandwiches, lobster rolls, etc, as well as a selection of baked goods from the best local bakeries, and ice cream. Falmouth's town beach and marina are just down the hill.

Beautiful walking and cycling path along the water, wrapping around most of the eastern and northern parts of Portland's little peninsula. Lovely views and a sandy beach along the way. You also can find some of Portland's best food trucks here, like Falafel Mafia, Mr. Tuna, Cargo Pizza, Vy Banh Mi, La Mega, Tacos La Poblanita, and more.

You'll likely want to visit the Portland Head Lighthouse anyway, so definitely grab a lobster roll while you're there. Traditional and creative rolls on offer, and all are phenomenal. They also have Whoopie Pies and Moxie soda, for some authentic Maine treats! You can also find them (usually) at the Allagash Brewery!

Gorgeous old inn with delicious food and drinks near Scarborough Beach. We always take our guests here for lunch and the beautiful "cliff walk" (no real cliffs, but it's rocky and beautiful) around Prouts Neck. The surrounding beaches are wonderful, as well.

Sightseeing

Take the ferry to laid-back Peaks Island and rent bicycles from Brad's Bikes (or golf carts from Mike's Carts!) for a delightful half day or so. You can cycle all around the island, check out the old WWII battery, and choose from several lovely restaurants near the ferry pier. This is one of our favorite local summer activities with guests. The ferry is run by Casco Bay Lines, and runs hourly all day in both directions. To get to Peaks, simply head down to the Maine State Ferry Terminal and buy a ticket at least 30 minutes or so before departure. No need to book ahead (it isn't even possible). No ticket needed for return trip. *Note: Parking can be tricky in summer, so leave extra time.

Less than ten minutes from the house is a beautiful state park on a small island accessed via causeway. You can drive on and park (small fee to enter and park), and there is a lovely trail running the perimeter of the island. Several small beaches may be enjoyed along the way. Walking the entire loop is only about 1.5 miles.

If you'd like to try a guided tour before using our kayaks, or just want to see more of Casco Bay on a kayak or SUP, Portland Paddle is the place. As a bonus, it's located on the Eastern Prom trail, so you will be well-positioned to enjoy Old Port before or after your paddle.

A beautiful 45-minute walk. No nearby parking, but the hack is that if you book a reservation at the restaurant at the Black Point Inn, you may leave your car while you do the walk. Combine it with a visit to the area's fantastic, wide-open beaches.

Known to locals as "the Eastern Prom," this is a lovely, paved, waterfront trail for walking or cycling (bike rentals available at The Portland Encyclopedia). The Eastern Prom food trucks are nearby off Cutter Street, up toward Munjoy Hill. There's a great little beach along the way, as well. Located right by Old Port, so combinable with just about any Portland adventure.
