Sightseeing
A protected, natural biosphere, Grandfather Mountain allows visitors of every desired level of activity to get close to nature. Drive to the top of the mountain to park and walk across the mlle-high bridge, visit the bears and otters at the animal rescue area and stroll through the remarkable museum. For those wanting a more intense level of activity, hike to famous Calloway Peak via ropes, ladders and a gorgeous wild trail.
Reservations and entry fee required.

A picturesque lake for trout fishing or to try out your kayaking skills. Take a 2.3-mile stroll around its perimeter if you’d like an easy hike. Price Park is a huge park down the road with creeks for the kids to splash in, picnic tables, and open areas for sport. You’ll find the trailhead for locals' favorite 5-mile loop hike, Boone Fork Trail, leading from the parking area too.

Beacon Heights TrailAn easy 1-mile round trip, this trail is the most yield for your effort if you want to feel on top of the world with serious mountain views. Pack a picnic or munch on the wild berries that grow everywhere here in late summer.

A "gotta see and experience" bridge built around the side of the Grandfather Mountain biosphere in order to protect its rare flora and fauna. No pedestrian activity is allowed on the actual bridge but you'll never forget the feeling of flying through the air over mountains once you've driven it! Gorgeous photos may be taken of the viaduct from 221 heading south. Continue on the Blue Ridge Parkway exit, and head north for a few miles. You'll know when you've reached it!
