Point of Interest
“Originally named Bond Street, Gaya Street located in the Kota Kinabalu has been the centre of business for over a hundred years. The wooden shops with nipah roofs are long gone but here is where generations-old family businesses are still thriving passed down from father to son. Every Sunday morning, the length of Gaya Street is closed off to traffic to make way for the Fair. Shop for anything under shady trees and over-sized umbrellas, like batik sarongs, fruits and flowers, arts and craft, footwear, antiques and souvenirs, cakes, even pets and herbs!. This is the best place to experience the cross-section of the local population when entire families enjoy a Sunday Outing”

“NON HALAL Yu Kee Bak Kut Teh (佑记肉骨茶) is the most crowded restaurant in Gaya Street of Kota Kinabalu city after office hours, and throngs of local and tourists come to try their famous Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶 in Chinese), which is pork and organs simmered for hours in soup of herbs and spices (such as star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui and garlic). The broth has nice aroma of traditional herb and the soup is thick and rich in meat sweetness. Once it enters your mouth, your body will send you a rewarding signal to tell you that it’s nutritious stuff. ”

“Location Gaya Street (Sunday Market) is the place to go on Sunday mornings for some retail therapy. It is located at the Kota Kinabalu Central Business District which has served as the centre for businesses for over a hundred years. Overview Gaya Street is closed off to traffic every Sunday morning to make way for the fair. You can buy almost everything here. There are stalls which sell arts, craft, food, fruits, antiques and so much more. This indeed is the best place to experience the culture and the lives of the Sabahan families on a Sunday outing. The Gaya Street Fair starts as early as 6am in the morning until 1pm in the afternoon.”

“Serving Mediterranean style foods, and healthy salads and main courses, with home-made cakes and bread, apple pie, etc. Excellent coffee is served throughout the day, with wine by the glass or bottle available. Staff are friendly and efficient, and all speak English, and Malay of course. A favourite dish here is the goulash, very authentic, as the Chef is Hungarian. Free wifi is available, and there is air-conditioning too. ”

“NON HALAL There are two best bak kut teh in Kota Kinabalu that I have known so far. One is known as Yu Kee Bak Kut Teh and the other one is known as Sin Kee Bak Kut Teh. There are just located one street away from each other. However, both of them got the same jam packed customers as you can see from the picture above. You just cannot detect any available seat around. This is how good they are. The one and only chef in action to prepare the whole bak kut teh to all the patrons. The surprising part is the serving speed was extremely fast. Usually when you see so many people, you might think you will need to wait for quite some time but he can make sure you will get your food at the fastest speed.”
