“Macaulay Heritage Park is an attractive historic site featuring many points of interest: Macaulay House, built in 1830 and restored to the mid 1850s; the historic former Church of St. Mary Magdalene, now the Prince Edward County Museum; the old St. Mary Magdalene Parish Cemetery; the Heritage Gardens and the Carriage House. Reverend William Macaulay was originally sent to this area as a missionary. In 1823 he organized the Parish of Hallowell, donating the land for the church and paying for much of its construction from his own personal wealth. Reverend Macaulay’s contributions to the community were not only spiritual, but civic—donating his property for the construction of both a school and a courthouse; the latter has been in use since 1831. Macaulay was also instrumental in the naming of the town of Picton. Admission Adults: $5.00 incl. HST Seniors and Students: $4.00 incl. HST Children (5-12): $3.00 No HST Family (2 adults & up to 6 children): $14.00 incl. HST The church, home and grounds can also be used as a wedding venue. The historic former Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Macaulay Church has a brick front façade, is flanked by clear and stained glass windows and opens to a wide, central sanctuary. The church was built by the Reverend William Macaulay, the son of a Loyalist landowner, and today bears his name. This venue is available for ceremonies only. The grounds of Macaulay Heritage Park can accommodate outdoor receptions. Once a grand residence for the Reverend William Macaulay, who gave the town of Picton its name, Macaulay House now serves as a museum highlighting early Victorian life in The County. For outdoor weddings, there is a portico at the front and side of the building, which can be used as unique wedding arches. The property has extensive gardens surrounded by deep green lawns. The charming Stone Room is the perfect venue for small gatherings.”

A highlight is Amelia’s Tea Room, which offers breakfast and/or lunch during Special Events on site. Admission Adults $5.00 incl. HST Seniors and Students $4.00 incl. “Rose House has survived since the early 1800s with few alterations, inhabited by 5 generations of the Rose family. Peter Rose arrived in Prince Edward County among the first Marysburgh settlers, made up largely of United Empire Loyalists and Hessian (German) soldiers who had fought for the British in the American Revolution. According to tradition, Rose House is constructed from salvaged timber from the community’s original Lutheran Church. Peter and his wife, Christina Bongard, raised 11 children in this modest farmhouse. Admission by donation.”

“The Quinte Educational Museum and Archives was established in 1977 and incorporated in 1978, by a group of educators and other interested people, as an independent, non-profit, charitable organization with a mission: to tell the story of education in Ontario; encourage interest in the history of education; support Canadian Studies (Heritage & Citizenship) and The Ontario Curriculum; preserve artifacts and records, and provide an archive and library for social and educational research. The QEMA Archives contain thousands of fascinating records from historical documents to anecdotal material about early school life. Financial records provide information ranging from government grants and salaries of school teachers, to small items such as the cost of a cord of wood, and charges for sweeping and making the fire. We also display many photographs, trophies, scrapbooks, and other archival materials. In addition, QEMA has a large collection of school texts and educational reference books. Research facilities are open to everyone from the person looking for pictures of ‘Granddad’s school’ to the serious researcher investigating the evolving story of education in Ontario. Our files are easy to use with the computer database, making record and book retrieval fast and accurate.”
