“Hoan Kiem Lake (Turtle Lake) is a central feature of Hanoi and is a popular hangout spot throughout the day with locals and tourists. Ngoc Son Temple sits on a small island in the centre of the lake and linked by a bridge, makes a beautiful background for a few photos. Around sunrise and sunset, this area becomes especially busy with joggers, couples enjoying the relaxing views across the lake, and the elderly practising Tai Chi and line dancing. The temple attracts many visitors and was built in commemoration of the 13th century military leader Tran Hung Dao who was renowned for his bravery in the battle against the Yuan Dynasty. Homage is also paid to scholar Van Xuong and Confucian master Nguyen Van Sieu. The island on which the temple is built is known as Jade Island and is accessible by the iconic Huc Bridge or Rising Sun Bridge which is a charming scarlet-painted wooden bridge of classical Vietnamese design. The pagoda is also guarded by two towering posts decorated with Chinese writing. The lake and temple are probably the most famous places in Hanoi city in which to rest and enjoy the view and are a great place to sit back and watch the locals. Hoan Kiem Lake is free of charge, but there’s a fee of VND 20,000 to visit Ngoc Son Temple, which sits on a small island in the centre of the lake. - Location: Hanoi Old Quarter ”

“This prison was built by the French in the 1880s. American POWs sarcastically named this as the “Hanoi Hilton.” “Hoa Lo” literally means “stove”; it was surely no Hilton. “One of Hanoi’s most prominent family run restaurants, Bun Cha Huong Lien, had no idea that one day, they’ll be hosting an US President and a celebrity chef in one table and would be making headlines on the largest American news channel the next day. Tucked in an unassuming street just south of the French Quarter in the capital city of Hanoi, Nguyen Thi Lien, one of two proud owners of Bun Cha Huong Lien delightfully prepares the meat that they’re going to serve for the rest of the day.”
