“The castle of Brederode dates from 1180 and housed 18 different lord up to 1679. Today you can visit the castle from March until end of October. From November until March the castle is closed because of the bats which then have their winter wake. However in spring/summer you can visit the castle and see the bats :) There are 9 different bat species living on the castle. Check the website for more information.”

These courtyards surrounded by almshouses (charitable housing) hark back to a bygone era when wealthy members of society founded them to house poor, unmarried or widowed women. “The building was designed by Lieven de Key around 1597 and is built with Namense steen from Namur, Belgium. It is the only building in Haarlem that was built this way, and was designed in its day as a landmark that befits an authority. The weigh house masters needed to be able to judge the correct measure of a shipload of grain that was delivered in Haarlem. “Haarlem is one of the cities in the Netherlands that has a number of 'hofjes'. Some of them are even still in use with boards of regents. The word 'hofje' just means small garden, because the hofjes are generally small houses grouped around a community kitchen garden with a water pump. Often they were a The Brouwershofje is a 'hofje' on the Tuchthuisstraat in Haarlem, Netherlands. The Hofje was founded by the Haarlem Guild of Beer brewers, one of the most powerful guilds in Haarlem. It was initially named the St. Maartenshofje after the patron saint of the brewers.
