Around the corner on the main square is the Piramide stop of Subway Line B which stops at the Circo Massimo in one stop, the Coliseum in two stops and at the main railroad station (Stazione Termini ) in 4 stops. For those who would like to visit the magnificent ancient city of Ostia Antica, which was the main port of ancient Rome, there is the Roma Lido local train station on the square that goes to the ruins of Ostia Antica and the Roman seaside. This “journey thru time” to ancient Rome is just a 30 minute ride away.
Directly across the street from the local train station is the celebrated English Cemetery (Cimitero acattolico) in which both Keats and Shelley are buried. It is nestled on a small hill with its towering cypress trees in the shadows of the Pyramid of Cestius (12 B.C.). and a section of the city's ancient Aurelian wall. Farther along the Wall is a small British Military Cemetery, a lovely space of beauty and quiet and easy to find. The historic districts of Testaccio and Trastevere are very interesting sections of old Rome full of shops and restaurants (trattorias). Less than half a mile from this apartment is the Centrale Montemartini museum. It was originally a 1920's power generating plant which has been transformed into a fascinating museum displaying both the original generating equipment and a permanent exhibit of about 400 ancient Roman sculptures. The historic center of Rome with its many sites such as Pza. Navona, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain is within walking distance from both of these Districts and buses and trams are also available to reach the historic center. Of special interest in the Trastevere district is the famous Porta Portese market, a sprawling open-air flea market open only on Sunday mornings and attracts large crowds.
