Welcome! A lovely, spacious room awaits, with a superbly comfortable king-sized bed, luxurious linen & ensuite rain shower/WC in a well-appointed family town house. Located by Pavilion Gardens, near the Opera House, shops, pubs & travel hubs. Breakfast provided. Dogs welcome.
Our regular guests are walkers, ramblers, climbers, birders, flyfishers here for the Peak District, as well as heritage & stately home lovers, University & spa-goers; actors, musicians, concert-, theatre- & festival-goers.
This is a lovely room with oak and oak effect furniture, aubergine and white decor, natural wood floors, original artworks, quirky light fittings. We offer very high quality Egyptian cotton linen and towels, and anti-allergenic goose-feather and down duvets (in 3 different tog ratings depending on season) and pillows. Guests have use of a triple wardrobe, a large oak chest of drawers, two chairs and a small table, as well as bedside shelves and a King Sized bed with reading lights. There are plenty of power points. A tray with complimentary Buxton Water, Buxton Ale, and locally hand-made chocolates is provided on arrival. A good selection of Peak District walking and exploring guidebooks and maps is available in the room.
The ensuite shower room offers complimentary handmade toiletries by Buxton's Coconut Blush company. The ensuite room is snug; guests can also use the shared bathroom with large bath and shower. There's a further ground floor WC.
We can also provide a toddler-bed and bedding for a nominal extra cost.
The room has views to the horizon and overlooks the patio container garden where nuthatches and goldfinches regularly visit birdfeeders.
We use professional housekeepers to prepare the room after each check out, and this is reflected in the one-off cleaning charge.
WiFi is good throughout the house. Your intro letter will include the log on details.
An uncooked self-service meat-free breakfast is provided - eggs, cereals, toast, often home-made marmalade and jams, sometimes freshly baked croissants or bagels, etc. We're happy to provide vegan, gluten-free, non-dairy and other specific foods too if given notice. By separate financial arrangement we can also provide other ingredients for cooked breakfasts and other meals - veggie and non-veggie - or you can make use of the kitchen to prepare your own meals when it's available. In all cases, let us know in advance anything you particularly want.
At other times guests are very welcome to use the kitchen when it's free, which has a double range cooker, microwave, espresso machine, mocha, and balkan coffee pot. Teas and coffee are available and a guest fridge is provided for your own food: this is shared with a long-staying guest in our second guest room. Guests are expected to clear, wash up and put away after all their meals.
Guests are generally welcome to use the double-fronted living room with the TV (Freesat & free on demand services) during the day and whenever else it is free - if there's a particular programme you want to see please ask!
There's a washing machine (and dishwasher) in the utility room and a dryer in the basement, which can be used: there is a donations jar for contributions to washing powder and power. We also have a boot-cleaning sink and a selection of waterproofing supplies, which can also be used for a nominal donation.
We ask that shoes be removed and kept in the porch.
Please note that there are a number of steps up to the front door, and that the room is on the first (not ground) floor. There is no ramp, lift (elevator) or stairlift.

We will send you a very detailed email letter with linked information on the local area, from walking guides to transport links to bars and restaurants, as well as information on how everything from the coffee machine to the washing machine works. I am always happy to socialise with guests as much or as little as guests would like, when I'm at home.
I love the outdoors, and in particular can help with good knowledge and contacts if you're interested in birdwatching, trout fishing, and country walks and pubs. I don't know a lot about climbing, caving and mountain-biking, but I know people who do ... We have a large selection of guidebooks - some in the room, others in the hall - on walking and other outdoor pursuits in the Peak District, as well as Ordnance Survey maps that guests can borrow. I work in the arts and will be pleased to advise on the local cultural offer, too.
We have two very cute and friendly dogs who will say hello and who appreciate attention. Ditto children!
My two children and two dogs share the house too. The teenager is largely self-contained in an attic apartment, appearing from time to time in the kitchen, but otherwise keeping a low profile. The little chap, when he's here, really likes a chat! This is a lively, lived-in and much-loved family home. Your room is spacious, spotless and quiet; the living rooms may be a bit more chaotic at times.
There is a comprehensive wireless-linked smoke and CO2 detection system in place.
- No smoking in the house, but there is small back yard / garden. Please use, and empty, the ashtray.
- Dogs by arrangement: we're a dog-friendly house, with two in residence, and like to make sure the canine guests will be comfortable too. Please get in touch to discuss your dog's stay.
- Please remove shoes in the porch.
- Please wash and put away after all meals.
- Please recycle thoughtfully and carefully.
