This is a goshiwon (고시원) that happens to be listed on Airbnb. These are designed for maximum privacy at minimum cost, specifically for college students, college student hopefuls, and recent job-seeker migrants into the city. To get a sense of the size of the room, take a shipping container and cut that in half. That's your whole room. The bathroom is in the back. (It's a fully wet bathroom, as if a shower stall was extended to include the sink and toilet. It may be a tight squeeze for larger folks.) This is not a hostel to meet fellow travelers and fun locals; it's meant to accommodate only one fairly quiet person (walls are a bit thin). Luckily that's exactly who I was on this particular trip. The room features A/C and an ondol (온돌 water-based underfloor heating). With the tiny space, the room can get uncomfortably warm very quickly even in the coldest of winter nights (didn't try the A/C). Each room has its own LG U+ modem and WiFi router, which can get slow at times (I think the trunk line is actually cellular-based instead if hard-wired). The shelves can fit about four duffel bags worth of stuff, but if you have a large hard-sided roller bag you might end up leaving that in the hallway (nobody will touch your stuff, and the place has a bunch of security cameras). The room itself is locked by a keypad whose combo you can set yourself, and there's a separate deadbolt. On the roof is a kitchen, washing machines, and clotheslines. Jeremy's mom keeps the kitchen stocked with all-you-can-eat rice, banchan (반찬 Korean side dishes), toast, and instant ramen. She actually speaks pretty good English if you randomly run into her. Jeremy himself drops by on occasion, this W House (actually one in a chain) being one of his many properties. You'll usually be seeing and dealing with Ji-Seok (지석), the on-site manager. Ji-Seok doesn't speak much English, but he is always available, incredibly responsive, and willing to help. Location is very convenient. There's a bus stop right outside, and the platforms at Hongik University Metro Station (홍대입구역) are about a 10 minute walk away. I often took bus line 7612 to get to the station or downtown Hongdae itself at the next stop (tip: with a T-Money card, bus-metro transfers are free within 30 minutes, just remember to tap out as you get off the bus). Restaurants and cafés line the path to the metro, including a 24-hour convenience store across the less-busy street (tip: (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Street View is outdated by it's seems a few years here). Just head up Yeonhui-ro (연희로) and look for a karaoke bar with a bright pink sign saying "緣", then go upstairs. The daily rate was a bit expensive from what I've heard, but I wanted to limit my loss in case I somehow couldn't enter Korea, or needed to leave shortly after arrival. The monthly rate is closer to what locals pay...
