Located on a strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Central Mountain Range, Hualien is considered one of the most pleasant cities in taiwan. Visitors are treated to amazing scenery and fresh air. It is also the base if one wants to tour the famous Taroko Gorge located just a few miles north of the city.
The city center is small and east to navigate on foot, although scooters are available for rent (just let us know in advance). Getting around by scooter is the best and most local way to see and explore the gorge and Hualien. If you can’t ride, bicycles are also available for rent to navigate the city and coastline.

The name, Taroko, means “magnificent and beautiful” in the Truku language of the Truku indigenous tribe. The gorge is composed mainly of metamorphic rocks such as marble and even jade. The most phenomenal aspect of the park is the amazing relief. In a single afternoon you can travel from rugged coastal cliffs through a maze of subtropical forested canyons to high elevation subalpine coniferous forests. So if you’re a nature lover, Taroko Gorge will not disappoint you. If you’re not a nature lover, you will be one after seeing Taroko.
