Area well served by public transport and all amenities.
Specialities to eat and drink in Funchal
•Fish: One local delicacy is a variety of swordfish exclusive to the seas of Madeira and Japan. Its exquisite white flesh is usually served with banana and may be baked, grilled or fried. You will also find octopus and delicious shellfish such as limpets and sea snails.
•Meat: With regard to meat, one highlight is the grilled kebabs threaded onto bay leaf skewers, giving them an aromatic flavor. Another speciality is "carne em vinha de alhos" – meat marinated in a mixture of white wine, garlic, bay leaves and spices for several days, and then fried.
•Bread: Don’t leave the island without trying the ‘bolo do caco’ (literally ‘cake of piece’), a kind of bread made using sweet potato and cooked on a piece of broken tile.
•Madeira wine: Its peculiarity resides in a slow “cooking” period of three to six months at 50c°. Some are mixed with cognac, to help conserve them. There are 4 varieties:
oSecial, pale and ideal for aperitifs;
oVerdhelo, semi-dry and the perfect accompaniment to cheese and fruit;
oBual, very aromatic and served with desserts
oMalvasía, fruity and also for desserts.
The Madeira Island

This famous fireworks won In 2006/2007 the Guinness World of Records certified the 8 minutes fireworks as the "Greatest Fireworks Show in the World," and Madeira Island kept that title until 2012.
New Year's Eve in Madeira is known worldwide. This pyrotechnic show usually lasts 8 to 15 minutes (depending on the year) and extends around the city in the form of an amphitheater. The fire stations are placed along 6km and 2.7 km wide, running synchronously providing a unique show. At sea stations are also placed.
