Yu and her family were our first ever hosts, and they made our first Airbnb experience a great one! Kashiwabara is a lovely little town, it used to be the 60th station on the Nakasendo. The main road is lined up with beautiful old buildings: inns, public baths, former sake breweries, a museum, etc. Yu's house is a traditional Japanese house, at night their electro-car is recharged and parked right in the reception area. The quarters upstairs are very cozy. You will sleep on tatami mats and futon. There is no A/C, but the fan in conjunction with large windows on three walls provide sufficient cooling in summer. The toilet and the bathroom are downstairs, the stairs are very steep and require a little caution. You can either use the kitchen to cook or even have dinner with the family or dine at the local Chinese restaurant a few hundred metres away. Kashiwabara is a convenient location to explore Sekigahara (just a few kilometres away) and the eastern shore of Lake Biwa. We travelled by car and parked right along the road in front of Yu's house. Thanks again for a wonderful stay!

We spent two nights with Yu , Hideo, and Tsumugi, their sweet daughter in Kashiwabara. We loved our visit to the Kanasi region, but hold a special memory of meeting this beautiful family and being welcomed into their home in the countryside. Though only a brief visit, we learned so much from our hosts; not only about Japan, but about hospitality and what is important in life. We shared conversation, laughter, and delicious food. We enjoyed our walk and visit to their organic rice fields to get a glimpse of their life and the continuing importance of agriculture in Japan. Also the hard work it entails. While we were there, a Taiwanese family was also staying and assisting on the farm. This only added to our exposure as three cultures were able to share experiences and ideas. Kashiwabara is an easy train ride from Maibara or Nagoya and it is a very short walk to their home. We had a large airy room upstairs to ourselves with traditional tatami mats, comfortable futons, and a sitting area with a couch and sofa chair to relax. The people in the village were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed visits to the small stores and slower pace of village life. Hikone, southwest on the train, is a nice day trip away with its castle and lovely views. We feel truly fortunate that we had the opportunity to stay with Yu, Hideo, and Tsumugi. We definitely plan to visit again in the very near future.

This was a very unique, local and natural experience. The traditional Japanese home is located in a village in a spectacular area surrounded by mountains and rivers. You get a feeling of how rural Japan looks like. The family host is really friendly and helpful, we had dinner together and cooked for each other. Also got delicious vegetables and nuts at their organic shop. Definitely recommend for a very close-to-nature stay in an authentic rural scenery.
