Prostor

The Casita that we have waiting for you is delightfully rural chic. It was built in 2008 of high R~value Murocreto plastered with yellow ochre earth pigment. We lived in this 840 sq ft bungalow while we built our current home and studio forty paces downhill.

This is a cozy one bedroom casita with a double (matrimoniál) bed and good light for reading. The efficient kitchen includes an apartment size refrigerator, small microwave, and hotplates. The bathroom has a generous and draft~free shower stall. Rainwater catchment and solar hot water box on roof with gas backup. There is an enclosed twelve by twenty foot sunroom that makes an excellent separate studio space that you can leave set up and secure. Or it can double as a bunkhouse for your extra guests. There is a charming and private covered patio with chimenea and outdoor cooking arrangement and a deck atop the pump house for sleeping under the stars. Ample secure parking for your car or burro.

We owners are Grace Lovelace and George Thompson. We are longtime fiber artists, organic growers, vegetarians, teachers, Permaculture designers, and activists for causes of peace and social justice. Formerly of South Texas, we have been full time residents of the município (county) of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato for several years now.

We live on five organic hectares (that's 12+ acres) on the Camino Antíguo between the beautiful, charming, and delightful colonial cities of San Miguel de Allende and Santiago de Querétaro. About halfway, some 20 miles and maybe 40 minutes from either centro (downtown). Bus service is good to QRO, not so good to SMA.

We sharecrop our five acre milpa (cornfield) with our neighbors who plow and plant with a team of horses and cultivate and harvest by hand. Four colors of corn, many flavors of bean, onions, tomatoes in the greenhouse, raised beds with mezclun and greens, chard and artichoke. Fruit trees and roses.

Although we live within fifty miles of two million people, cell service is spotty because of the extinct volcanic peaks around us. Es muy tranquilo aquí. We live adjacent to a village named La Puerta del Aire (“The Door of the Wind” or, alternately, “The Gate to the Sky”) and about five km SE from a little town called Jalpa.

Try these latlong coordinates for finding our place on the Mesa de Guadalupe:
either in digital degrees   20 North point 74877 and -100 West point 58876   (G**gle Maps)
or
the older D/M/S format    +20 degrees 44 minutes 53.60 seconds, -100 degrees 35 minutes 19.00 seconds  (G**gle Earth)

There are ample recreational activities here, solo or with a companion. The Mesa itself is fairly level and you can walk for miles on dirt roads or across country on friendly, neighboring, much larger ranchos or ejidos (communal landholdings) with few fences or concerns. Or in a very short hike you can be in rugged terrain requiring vigilance and caution. Birdwatching is superb. Here is the chance to take your nature, wildlife and campesino photography to the next level. If you choose, you can immerse yourself here in the life of rural México from the micro to the macro. Fiestas and pachangas are frequent and abundant here for both religious and secular occasions. There's hardly any difference. Bring your camera, binoculars, mountain bike, pony, or quatrimoto (fourwheeler), there is much to discover here amongst these three dormant volcanoes in the heart of México's colonial silver mining district.

The tranquil atmosphere and clean air at 7000' elevation is perfect for a private getaway whether it is a retreat for a writer or an artist or a honeymoon. This site is inspirational for poets and painters and lovers. Mornings in México are, of course, magical. You may also choose to engage Grace in an intensive workshop experience in one of the fiber arts or another of her many areas of expertise and experience. This is a working studio and farm with ongoing daily activities. You might learn to milk a goat, make tofu, or build a dry stack rock wall.

This was a phenomenal place to spend time. Surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and the warmth of the people, I was filled with a sense of peace and belonging. I was taken in and treated as one of the family. Grace and George went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. There were a variety of things in which to be involved, as this is a working ranch. The goats were an enjoyable treat as were all the animals, including dogs, cats, horses and chickens. I was given my first weaving lesson here and went home with my accomplishments. Grace is a wonderful and patient teacher. I loved it so much that I am already planning on returning. I hated leaving and cannot return soon enough.

I loved staying in the "Casita" at Grace and George's. They were such wonderful hosts and the fresh organic (most grown on site) was wonderful. Can't say enough good things about the homemade goat cheese. And one of the best things was that I was able to sleep like a baby every night. With no worries about getting up early, I was able to truly relax and have a great vacation. Thanks so much Grace and George.

I stayed with George and Grace for almost a month in their casita on their organic farm in Guanajuato state. I really loved the time I spent there. They are great hosts and now they have become great friends too. They are so kind, approachable, helpful, skilful and knowledgeable about so many things. They have a vast selection of very interesting English language books they are happy to share with you during your stay and Grace is always surprising and delighting me with her concoctions: green tomato chutneys, ginger candies, soaps etc. as well as their amazing homemade breads which have become a firm favourite of mine. And all organic! They are lots of friendly dogs there to keep you company and one even kept guard outside my casita most nights. The casita itself is very comfortable and feels cosy and it has all you need to make your stay comfortable. The farm is very quiet and out of the way while still being so close to San Miguel, Querétaro and Celaya. It's a great place to get away from it all and relax and unwind, to get back to basics, to get in touch with nature and all that is natural, and to recharge your batteries. I heartily recommend that you spend some quality time there.
