Your Home Away from Home on California Street

Private smoke-free one-bedroom apartment, fully furnished, just bring your suitcases. Private entrance, street level, full kitchen, dining area, living room, bath with tub and shower, bedroom with deluxe queen-size bed, secluded private patio.

Sleeps two very comfortably in the bedroom. Two more can sleep, quite comfortably, on the full-size pull-out sofa-bed in the living room. In an emergency, a fifth can sleep on a supplied foam pad on the floor.

The dining area can easily seat four, or six without crowding too much. It has oak hardwood floors.

The kitchen has a full size Hotpoint gas range and range hood, full size refrigerator/freezer, automatic dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, toaster, blender, toaster oven, rice cooker, electric kettle, all pots, pans, dishes, utensils, silverware, etc. There's a new LG washer/dryer combo that will wash and dry your laundry in one continuous operation. If you need anything else, just ask. The flat is part of a duplex and I live next door.

The living room has a full-size desk with wireless Internet hookup, free 24/7.

There's a compact laser printer that plugs into your laptop with a supplied USB cable. Need to print your boarding passes? No problem.

There's a 32" LCD HD TV with full 1080p resolution that you could use as a monitor. There is Comcast Xfinity cable TV with HD channels and on-demand movies and music.

There's a CD/DVD/Bluetooth player with a selection of DVDs and CDs for you to sample.

There's a skylight and original signed artwork.

There's a Scrabble set, Monopoly, chess board, domino set and a deck of cards to play with. .

The main bed has 9-inch Tempurpedic memory foam mattress topped by a 2-inch cotton waffle pad for coolness. There's plenty of extra pillows and blankets for any season.

All bedding, linen, towels supplied. There's an iPad/iPhone compatible alarm clock, and reading lights for two. The bedroom also has an easy chair, a big dresser, and a walk-in closet, all on cushy wall-to-wall carpet. An additional closet for coats is in the hallway.

Need a baby crib? A Graco brand crib / playpen is folded up in the hall closet for you to set up and use, no extra charge. It can also be set up outdoors in the patio with the supplied cover. A booster seat and child-proofing devices are available. A car seat is also available for your use.

The flat has its own dedicated hot-water heater. Iron, ironing board and small sewing machine are supplied.

The garden patio is off the kitchen and completely private, yours alone. You can eat there or just unwind and smell the roses and the jasmine. (But no smoking!)

Parking is free. Except during the daytime on Saturdays when the Monterey Market crowd overflows its parking lot, there's usually plenty of parking on our street. Night parking is never a problem; most guests park right in front of the door. There's no meters, no time restrictions and you won't get a ticket.

Bonus: Electric vehicle charger, Level 2, in our driveway. Free to you.

You can safely park your bicycle in the enclosed patio. The street is a designated Bicycle Boulevard and you can bicycle from here all over town.

The neighborhood is quiet and lined with trees. It's away from the undergraduate campus madness. Here you find post-docs, staff, young families, retired people, a mixture of all kinds. At night the only sound you'll hear is the whistle of the occasional railroad train in the distance. You can snooze with the double-paned windows open if you like, and on a clear day the morning sun will shine on your pillows. Or you can roll down the window covers, draw the double drapes, and sleep in dark silence.

In your immediate vicinity you have:

The famous Monterey Market, like a Farmer's Market but much more, now open seven days a week. People drive from all over the Bay Area to shop there. Real estate within walking distance of this store costs a premium of $10,000 or more. It's your corner grocery.

The Espresso Roma coffee house. Indoor and outdoor seating, high-voltage coffee, inexpensive healthy breakfasts and lunches, relaxed atmosphere. It's across the street from the Monterey Market.

On the same corner you have a meat market and deli with rotisserie chicken. Next to that is a wonderful store that roasts its own coffee beans and also has tea, spices, chocolates, cheeses, and much else; a fish market dedicated to sustainable fishery; a bakery with fresh bread and pastries every morning; a laundry, liquor store, beauty parlor, flower shop, and the Berkeley Horticultural Nursery – an exquisite botanical garden practically at your front door; don't miss it.

Two restaurants complete this little village on your corner: Lily's Chinese, inexpensive but good, no MSG. Gioia Pizzeria, thin crust, by the slice or the pie, very popular.

Also on the corner: a local bus that takes you to downtown Berkeley, and an express bus to San Francisco. A bus that circles the UC Berkeley campus is a six-minute walk away; you can be at the nearest edge of campus in 15 minutes by bus, 25 minutes on foot.

A five-minute walk takes you to M.L. King Park, which has a playground for kids and another one for toddlers, plus a quarter-mile track, soccer field, four public tennis courts, and a public swimming pool that opens at 6:30 a.m. A baseball field and basketball courts adjoin the park. Next to the park is the famous Edible Schoolyard garden, sponsored by Alice Waters of Chez Panisse.

In a wider radius you have:

The North Berkeley BART station is a ten-minute walk. I've walked it many times. From there it's a 25-minute commuter train ride to downtown San Francisco, or 13 minutes to downtown Oakland.

The world-famous Chez Panisse restaurant, birthplace of California Cuisine, is a 16-minute walk. Across the street from this foodie Mecca is the Cheeseboard Pizza, a worker-owned collective that serves vegetarian pizza and live jazz six days a week to long lines of hungry devotees. These establishments, together with the original Peet's Coffee and Saul's Jewish restaurant and deli, form the heart of the “Gourmet Ghetto,” a cluster of restaurants, shops, and markets ranging from very cheap to very pricey.

From there you could amble north a block to Live Oak Park, a shady oasis popular with little ones and their parents, and a site for arts and crafts fairs.

Or you could stroll south along busy Shattuck Avenue and in a few minutes you'll be in downtown Berkeley with its movie theatres and still more shops and restaurants. Stride uphill from there and you hit the UC Berkeley campus, the colorful Telegraph Avenue strip with its street vendors and characters, and all the surrounding attractions too numerous to list here.

In the other direction from your California Street home base, a pleasant 18-minute walk over a gentle hill gets you to the more sedate Solano Avenue shopping strip. Among dozens of restaurants here, Zachary's Chicago Pizza is an experience not to be missed, if you love deep dish pizza. Noah's Bagels also has a big fan base.

A seven-minute drive from home puts you into the Berkeley Rose Garden, with great postcard views of the Bay as backdrop to the flowers, and a favorite wedding spot. A few more minutes by car leads you to Tilden Park, with the beloved Little Farm where kids can get close to farm animals, and a carousel, plus picnicking and miles of woodsy hiking.

The shore of San Francisco Bay is a ten-minute drive from home westward to Cesar Chavez Park, a verdant paradise built over the former city dump (but you'd never know it). From this lovely bird-rich oasis you have sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, Mount Tamalpais, and more. Bring your camera; sunsets can be spectacular if the clouds are right. The Berkeley municipal fishing pier and a place to rent kayaks, sailboards and small sailboats, or to take a dinner cruise, are nearby.

Need I mention the many splendors of Northern California beyond the neighborhood? San Francisco, Muir Woods, Point Reyes National Seashore, the Napa Valley wine region, Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur, the Gold Rush country, Yosemite, the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe, Reno Nevada ... all are within range of your home base on California Street.

Other points:

No smoking. Anything. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property indoors or out. Smoking is not permitted on the patio. Smoking is permitted on the street. Please, no candles or incense.

Families are welcome. There are five steps with a handrail between the flat and the street. Kids are welcome. Devices to child-proof the outlets and cabinets are available for your use, but always keep an eye on the little ones.

Loved my stay. Martin is a great host, very pleasant. Bed is very comfortable only one comment, there is a good 7 inch step down into the kitchen when you enter. Other than that, would definitely stay again.

My wife and I stayed at Martin's place for 12 days. The place is in a quiet residential neighborhood. It was very comfortable and had everything necessary for a stay of that duration. The only things missing were a washer and dryer, but there is a laundry a short walk from the apartment. The place is very private -- the entrance is screened from the street by a tall wooden fence with a gate. There is a very comfortable, private patio inside the gate and outside the door to the unit. Within 2 blocks are the Monterey Market, a food market with an astonishing amount and variety of fresh fruit and vegetables along with a decent array of other groceries. It supplied most of our food needs for our stay. Also within easy walking distance are a coffee shop, a Chinese restaurant, a pizza parlor, a butcher shop, a fish market and a gourmet tea and coffee shop. The north Berkeley BART station is within half a mile. On weekdays, BART runs every 15 minutes during the day and evening, and you can be in the City within 30 minutes. BART made Martin's place a good place to stay for a visit to San Francisco. The Gourmet Ghetto is less than a mile away, and we walked there several times during our stay. Martin, who lives next door, was an excellent and responsive host. We had a problem with a balky combination lock on the front door, and Martin replaced it first thing the following morning. All in all, we have nothing but positive things to say about Martin and his apartment. We would gladly stay there again and recommend it to others without hesitation.
