North Georgia Mountains Weather & Climate Conditions
The weather in Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains is almost as great as the scenery! The Georgia Mountains area of the Chattahoochee National Forest has summers with warm to mild days and comfortably cool nights. Winters in the area can be quite cold with occasional snow and ice at the higher elevations. Precipitation varies but usually stay between 50 an 80 inches a year, most of this in the form of winter rain. Below is a climate breakdown by season to help you pack appropriately for your trip.
SPRING (MARCH - MAY): Spring weather varies greatly. April is typically our rainiest/wettest month of the year. Early spring is normally chilly during the day with an average high in the low 60's. However, weather in the region can be very unpredictable. It's been well known to be in the 70's and as low as the 30's-40's. March is usually a windy month, April showers bring May flowers. April and May daytime temperatures can get up to the 70's. Evening temperatures during this time average around 40°.
SUMMER (JUNE - AUGUST): We enjoy warm days and cool nights during the summer, which is a great escape from the city heat, usually about 8-10 degree difference from Atlanta temperatures. Occasional thunderstorms provide most of our precipitation ranging from 4.5'' to 5.5'' during these months. June is usually in the high 70's to low 80's by the end of the month with humidity starting to set in. July & August temperatures usually stay in the high 80's - 90's with humidity. Summer nights are cooler and a little more comfortable, however humidity is still a factor, though not as extreme as Southern Georgia, Alabama and Florida typically experience.
AUTUMN (SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER): October is typically our dryest month and with mild temperatures, it is a very comfortable climate. September and October qualify as "Indian Summer" weather with mid 70s to low 80s during the daytime and mid 40s to 50s at night. November cools down significantly with an average high of 62° and low of 36°.
WINTER (DECEMBER-FEBRUARY): December through February is the most consistent in terms of temperature with January being our coldest month of the year. Daytime highs around 50° with below freezing temperatures overnight. Snow may blanket the mountains about once or twice a year, however there are seasons when we get no snow accumulation.

The start point for the Appalachian trail. Access to the starting point of the Appalachian Trail is in southern Fannin County at Springer Mountain. From Blue Ridge, take Aska Road 13.5 miles until it deadends into Newport Road. Turn right on Newport Road, go 4.5 miles until it dead ends into Doublehead Gap. Turn right on Doublehead Gap and go 2 miles to FS Road 42 (on the left). Turn left and go approximately 6.5 to 7 miles to the parking area on your left. A short hike from the parking lot (across the street) leads to the summit.
Bear Creek – one of North Georgia’s most popular mountain biking and hiking destinations – is filled with towering old growth trees that canopy thick shade over a beautiful, rich, densely vegetated creek valley. The Bear Creek Trail hikes the banks of Bear Creek on a trek to a towering old-growth tree – the second largest tree in Georgia – that shades the surrounding forest. 1/2 hour drive from the cabin.
Recreation at Carters Lake
Because of its remote nature, the lake and surrounding land offer more outdoor activities than Allatoona or Lanier. A large wildlife management area gives hunters a spectacular array of medium to large animals. Fishing is also a popular pastime.
Four hiking trails of varying difficulty make the lake a hiking destination. The Oak Ridge Nature Trail follows a high ridge to the lakeside, then returns along a creek. In just over a mile there are four distinct ecosystems. Tumbling Waters Trail (Ridgeway) takes you to one of the few remaining waterfalls in the area (many are beneath the level of the lake}. Here Tails Creek twists and turns down a fifty-foot cascade. The Hidden Pond Songbird Trail is an easy hike that allows you to visit the wetlands of a gentrified beaver pond, and the beaver pond itself, rich in waterfowl. Finally, the Carters Lake Nature Trail takes you through some of the most scenic areas near the Visitors Center, with multiple scenic views of the lake.
Tubing & kayaking available in Ellijay
For the ultimate river trip we suggest the Nantahal river
The Nantahala River, located in Nantahala National Forest, is one of America’s favorite whitewater playgrounds. Its ideal location at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, just a short distance from Cherokee and Bryson City, NC, makes the Nantahala River convenient to mountain vacationers.
Eight miles of clear water, constant waves and swift currents make the Nantahala River a delight for all ages and groups interested in an exhilarating introduction to whitewater rafting. The trip takes over 3 hours and contains numerous class I and II rapids, with a class III at the end. You have the choice of a fully guided trip with a guide in each raft or renting equipment and paddling on your own. Since the Nantahala River is a dam-controlled river, one can expect good water flows at all times of the year.
All trips include transportation to and from the river, changing rooms and hot showers.
