I stayed with Francois, Marie, and their three kids for about six months. My experience has been excellent and I consider them to be my very good friends and my family away from home. Marie and Francois have been very helpful from the very beginning. Soon after I checked in, I had to travel abroad for a few days and they let me store some of my personal belongings in the house. They also gave me a spot in the garage to store my bike for the duration of my stay. In general, they have very responsive to any questions and requests I had.
The bedroom and bathroom: The bedroom is as seen in the pictures: spacious, comfortable, and bright. It has a big walk-in closet, a queen-sized bed, a dresser and a big desk, which makes it ideal for visiting students like myself. The room has two big windows overlooking the back yard and during the day it gets a lot of sun.
The bathroom is a door away. It is very spacious and recently renovated. There is always hot water. Marie and Francois provide bed sheets, a comforter, a blanket, bath towels, etc.
The kitchen: You name it, it has it. The kitchen is well-equipped and literally a chef’s dream. It has a big gas burner and a professional oven. There is also a big fridge in the garage/pantry that is shared with one other tenant. This means you can do a week’s worth of grocery shopping. The owners also provide some space, where you can store dry food. There is also a small part of the kitchen countertops that is dedicated for the two tenants. I could not have asked for more in terms of them allowing me to use the kitchen and this comes from someone who is cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The area: The area is ideal, close to Solano avenue which is full of local shops and restaurants. It is mostly populated by young families with children. It’s safe and I never felt like it was dangerous walking on the street at nights. The 18, 25, 7, and FS bus stops are 2 minutes away on Solano. There are two grocery stores located close by (Andronicos and Safeways). There is also a fruits-and-vegetables market close by (Montery Market) as well as a local butcher shop.
In summary, my stay with Francois and Marie has been amazing and I am appreciative to both for their flexibility and hospitality. From the very beginning I felt welcomed. I believe that I developed a great friendship with them that goes beyond the typical tenant/host relationship and for that I am grateful. I had the opportunity to bond with the family at a deeper level by spending Thanksgiving with them, organizing a farewell dinner, and, in general, by engaging in richer conversations. The day I checked out, it felt like I was leaving home, leaving behind people I really care about.
