What a perfect little gem of a place - just what we needed for a quick weekend get-away. I'm hosting an exchange student, and was looking for more opportunities to share the "culture" (and a few oddities) of Wisconsin. We had a long weekend in that dreaded "shoulder season" (not winter, not summer, season when the weather isn't great and not much is going on), but it also means that the usual heavy tourist spots are a bit less busy. So we decided to avoid the crowds and check out House on the Rock and looked for a place in Spring Green. This was exactly what I'd hoped for, and a bit more.
The guesthouse is immaculate and tastefully decorated, yet cozy and livable. It was just the right size for me and my student - she was very comfortable sleeping on the the living room futon. I'll admit it was a bit tricky finding the alleyway entrance, but Aaron had sent an exact location, so it really was just a matter of trusting the guidance and turning into what looked like a driveway at first. The guesthouse is perfectly located a block from downtown, and the neighborhood is very, very quiet - at least it was in the rainy early-spring weather.
Since so many things were still closed for the season I had asked Aaron for recommendations, which he generously provided. First on the list was Freddy Valentine's for dinner, and then Brewery Creek in Mineral Point - and we ate like kings! We did spend much of our Saturday at House on the Rock, but in another season I'd love to visit Taliesin or the multitude of State and other parks and hiking trails. The location of the guesthouse so close to town would make a wonderful day of wandering around Spring Green in better weather. And the Spring Green location is perfect for exploring the other towns nearby. It was nice to be able to come and go as we pleased, or just come home and watch a movie in the evening.
You really can make a lot out of a weekend in this area, and this is the a great place for a great value to use as your home base!
