In my early 20’s I built this unique and charming home, myself, with 200 year old barn beams, and local and repurposed materials. Nothing compares in its originality, as it grew much like my paintings: a creative expression of one vision built upon the ones before. From the huge skylight in the master bedroom, the exotic two-inch thick chestnut floors, and the elegant pond with waterfall, to the child-friendly solar heated exercise swimming pool, this home will cradle you. No detail exists without imagination and love. Paintings and Objects d’art abound, inside and out.
Upon completion of the first segment to this house, my girlfriend and I went West to lead wilderness expeditions in Wyoming, Alaska, Baja California and the Yucatan. Our first tenants were the young Thurman family, of Tibetan scholarship and celebrated actress fame. Robert wrote his doctoral thesis at this dining table and daughter, Uma, was asserting her will at a year of age. Since then, a long list of creative thinkers and doers have enjoyed their months of respite here -- shaping and manifesting their dreams and contributions to the world.
The five-week long wilderness expeditions that I led, in which I taught certification in outdoor skills, were with the foremost outdoor education school in the world, NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School). I led the first sea kayaking expeditions in Prince William Sound, Alaska, pioneered sea kayaking and snorkeling along the pristine Yucatan coastline of the 70s, led backpacking and horse packing expeditions in the Wyoming Rockies, and built my awareness of the splendor of nature at it’s most primitive, honest and forthright. These impressions inform my art today.
My paintings are found in private, corporate and institutional collections nationally and across the globe. Numerous articles and video documentaries feature both my home and my art -- from the famous book, “Woodstock Handmade Houses” to a Japanese architectural magazine and many more acknowledgements of the profound relationship between my life-style, my home and my creative expressions. I am a recent recipient of the coveted Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. From my website, one can view paintings and learn more about my life:
I would be pleased to answer any questions about my home, and be available to advise you in your Woodstock/Catskill Mountain adventure, from the many music, theater and visual art opportunities to the classic mountain stream swimming holes, an easy meander through the forest from this sanctuary home amid the grandeur and humility of nature. Trails, through vast NY State’ forever wild’ lands and easier, close to home hikes and strolls abound.
For over 45 years, this house has rented in various scenarios, however, only on a monthly basis, and this format is encouraged, as there is no better way to really relax and know a place. Some say Sept is the very best month. The Woodstock Film Festival is held in the fall. Dates change each year.
Included are all amenities and utilities, but breakfast you will enjoy preparing with your loved ones or partake of the many restaurants and delightful outdoor juice bars. The restaurants are superior and plentiful to select from. This is the world of nature and art that drew Utopian visionaries to this tiny farming community in 1903. The tradition of free, playful, profound thinking and living and the grace of neighborly communication are very much alive.
