Cocagne Earth Lodge is a beautifully designed, handcrafted eco-friendly and earthy home with 360-degree, uninterrupted mountain and sea views. Located 50 km from Cape Town, bordering a nature reserve, close to shops, restaurants and top healthcare services. Ideal for 4 adults and 2 children. We call it our 'Out of Africa' home because the design is inspired by our many travels through Africa. See cocagne dot co dot za.
The main living area is very open (from 3 m high to double volume) with 5 m wide concertina doors opening up completely to create a wonderful open flow between the lounge and the patio area. Positioned to shelter you from the summer south-easter wind, this outdoors area of the house is ideal for entertaining, complete with a large solar-heated swimming pool (gated, for family safety), a built-in covered braai area, a herb garden, and even a traditional clay pizza oven! The kitchen is fully equipped and has a separate bar, while the scullery area is fitted with a washing machine and tumble dryer. Leading from the kitchen and bar areas is the dining room, complete with a 8-seater table that overlooks the lounge with its large fireplace - perfect for winter and occasional cooler summer nights.
The top floor overlooks the living area, has an expansive terrace and uninterrupted views over False Bay, the Helderberg wine valley and Kogelberg Biosphere. Its open mezzanine is ideal for reading and games, has a small fireplace and is toddler-proof.
The main bedroom contains a super-king-size bed and has an en-suite bathroom with a bath, shower and bidet. It leads directly onto the terrace and has sea and mountain views. The second bedroom contains a queen-size bed, while the third bedroom contains a bunk bed (stacked single beds). These two bedrooms share a bathroom with a shower.
The house has 2 separate self-catering studios, which are occupied year round by long-term tenants (one of whom is a registered tour guide if you need one and the other one, a very discrete elder woman). Both are very quiet people who will respect your privacy. There are also 2 beautiful, big dogs (German Shepherd x wolf) and 2 adventurous cats who live on the property and are fed by one of the tenants. A maintenance man works from a downstairs office on site, Mon - Fri during business hours, should you need assistance with anything. A maid will clean the house twice a week, on Monday and Thursday.
The whole house is yours, as well as the patio, the swimming pool and the garden.
Be aware that there are 2 beautiful big dogs and 2 cats on the property. They are taken care of and fed by granny who lives in the upper studio.
The estate manager, Josiah, will assist you if necessary during the week, and the maid, Joyce, will come twice a week to do the cleaning of the house. The young lady that occupies the lower studio from time to time, is a nature travel guide.
I am a nature photographer and a web developer. I have a wonderful partner, Lisa and 2 amazing children, Enya and James... plus a german shepherd / wolf dog and 2 cats. I am very privilege to live on the edge of the Fogelberg Biosphere, amongst the richest floral region of the world.
