INTERACTION WITH GUESTS...
Eric and I reside on the ground floor with 'Suzie' dog & 'Tigger' cat. Effectively, we are your neighbours, we live a quiet life with lots of walking and birding with Suzie our dog and when home we enjoy chilling over nice food and the odd bottle of wine.
When we're not working away from home, should you wish, we will always be nearby for chat, suggestions, directions, company.... otherwise we will leave you to enjoy some rest and relaxation. You will have as much privacy as you would like, your space is very private.
Eric is always delighted to talk 'bird' with interested guests. If he's available he'd be delighted to guide guests around Wicklow for a day (for a small fee!), showing them the birds and the stunning Wicklow scenery. You can visit his website (BirdsIreland) for more information about guiding possibilities, reviews etc.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE ...
There will be a simple selection of breakfast items in your fridge on arrival, bread, preserves & cereals. Teas & ground coffee will be on the kitchen counter.
f birding is your thing or if you've always wondered if birding might be your thing, he'd be delighted to show you some birds for a special AirBnB rate. Half day & Full days are available.
Should you be hoping to bring your 'well-behaved, fully house-trained' family dog with you to stay at the Lodge, please let us know at the time of booking. There is a small additional fee for this.
• Check-in time is 5-7pm unless otherwise pre-arranged.
* Check out time is 11am
• No parties or events
• No smoking indoors
You must throw at least 10 balls (per hour!!!) for Suzie, our dog!!
You absolutely must drive slowly on the driveway to avoid any injury to the playing bunny rabbits or roaming hens.
Please, let us know if we can do anything to make your stay more enjoyable.
Please, no smoking indoors. You are welcome to smoke on the balcony, on the deck downstairs or anywhere in the garden.
Please, remove heavy outdoor shoes in the hallway and ideally wear soft shoes whilst in the Loft Apartment.
Note to Parents with Children:
Sorry, our apartment is not suitable for children under 7 due to large sections of low-level glass and unsafe stairs for small children.
We welcome children over 7 yrs of age at The Lodge, especially those interested in nature, birds & wildlife.
We feel that is important to clarify that our garden is a natural bird & wildlife habitat. It is not suitable for loud music, boisterous playing or ball games (other than with Suzie-dog).
We feel that it is also a good idea to let you know that there is a small pond which is not protected by a barrier so parents would be advised to supervise their children at all times.
There are paths and patches to walk and relax, however the grass is otherwise long in most areas and stinging nettles have been intentionally allowed to grow in certain chosen areas.
We really appreciate your understanding in this regard.

Hi there, Welcome to our Listing..
LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH...
We are Hazel Johnston and Eric Dempsey. We live in a Swiss-inspired self-built house in Newcastle, Co. Wicklow, 40 mins from Dublin airport & Dublin City centre.
I (Hazel) am a Longhaul Air Hostess with 27 years experience. I am outgoing, bubbly and love animals, birds, and wildlife. I also love people! and am often described as a 'people person'. I chose my flying job because I had a fascination with air travel, love exploring different cultures, cuisines and because I like chatting with people. I am hoping to do a little less Air Hostessing in the coming years and a lot more AirBnB-ing or hostessing of another sort. After 25 years in the air, I am keen to spend more time with my beloved family in my beloved County Wicklow.
Eric is an author, guide and speaker of all things Bird and Wildlife. He has published 9 titles related to birds and wildlife ie. 'The Complete Guide to Ireland's Birds', 'Finding Birds in Ireland', 'Birdwatching with Eric Dempsey', 'Ireland's Wildlife Year'. His latest book "Don't die in Autumn landed on the shelves last September. We are very excited about this and you'll get to peruse that along with his other books during your stay. Eric's company name is Birds Ireland & you'll find other reviews about him & the Lodge on Trip Advisor, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) and (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) under Birds Ireland, Eric Dempsey or Eric The Birdman.
We both love good food and the occasional glass of wine to accompany. We love birds and wildlife and spend much time in the outdoors 'looking for' or 'looking at' such things.
We were lucky to have the opportunity to build our own home in 2010. We built a lodge-style home with a self contained studio on the first floor with a view to having lots of guests to stay. There is also an additional double room & a spacious bathroom on this level.
It is a wonderfully unfussy comfortable first floor space, overlooking wild garden and Wicklow's beautiful scenery. A bright airy hallway connects to a private open-plan studio with three comfortable sofa beds, southeast facing balcony, kitchen/dining area and large bathroom with power shower and bath. Perfect Retreat for 1-4 persons.
We live on the ground floor level with our 4-legged family, Suzie our fun-loving Springer Spaniel and 3 moggies (cats), Cookie, Tigger & Loopy. Our 4-legged friends are not allowed into the first floor guest area. Our ground floor space is open whenever we are home during the daytime and early evening as a communal space to chat and to watch birds if you wish. We won't promise that this space will always be spick & span but we will promise that the first floor guest spaces will always be clean, tidy & welcoming.
Our garden is of the 'wilderness' variety and quite intentionally so, in order to entice and nurture birds, hedgehogs, bunnies, foxes, badgers, grasshoppers, dragonflies, newts, frogs, deer (if they promise not to munch on our new trees!)... and more. It is a lovely place to walk about, sit a while, contemplate, listen to birds or the sound of neighbouring countryside sounds such as hens, ducks, geese, sheep, horses, an aeroplane from the local aerodrome or a tractor working in a distant field.
My parents (Hazel's) live nearby, up the hill. We share a veggie plot and have fun experimenting with growing a few veggies. It is a lovely stroll up the hill to their home. They have a beautiful garden full of flowers and shrubs. They would always be happy for you to take a stroll around their garden. You are likely to meet my mother (Evelyn) pottering about in the garden, she would be delighted with any gardening tips you could share.
My father (Henry) has limited mobility and drives about the area in a golf buggy accompanied by his loyal dog 'Clyde'. You are likely to meet him on your way down the drive as he drops down for coffee in our kitchen on a daily basis. Henry would be so delighted if you should take an interest in his croquet lawn, even better if you would like to try the game, he'd be more than happy to lend you some mallets and balls along with some guidance on how to get going.
We are ideally located for those who hope to incorporate both the Wicklow Mountains and the beautiful Wicklow Coastline during their visit.
We love the proximity of both the sea and the beautiful Wicklow mountains, there's a great feeling of space and we feel very lucky to live where we live.
We would be more than happy to help you organise your route in order to incorporate the areas which would best suit your interests. We keep a selection of local tourist pamphlets for your perusal while and to help you choose some good excursions.
We love to walk on the local stoney beach at Newcastle in all weathers, it's 2km from the house. Equally we love the mountains for a good nature ramble through woods or moors.
Bring some good rain gear so that you don't miss out on being in the outdoors if you get a few drops of rain when you're here.
Roundwood & Lough Dan is about 20 mins driving from us, beautiful for an evening drive around the lakes. Two recommmended restaurants in this area would be The Roundwood Inn, a very quaint pub/restaurant serving a small but delicious menu. Also Woods & Byrne, a renovated pub/restaurant serving a god menu and with a great little bar attached which often has traditional live music.
Laragh, Glendalough are about 30 mins drive, a lovely continuation from Roundwood and Lough Dan. We highly recommend doing lunch or dinner in The Wicklow Heather while in Laragh, even a coffee or a drink on the terrace if you don't have time for a meal. Say hello to Betty, the wonderful proprietor and hostess.
Avoca and Wooden-bridge are pretty villages, about 30 mins from us. Avoca was the setting for the famous tv series 'Ballykissangel' and is home to a large flock of breeding Red Kite. There is a great restaurant in Avoca village, the original Avoca Handweavers Cafe, well worth a trip just for the tasty food and great coffee. Also a good little pub for a pint, one which was used in the Ballykissangel tv series.
Brittas Bay beach is about 20 mins from us. It's fantastic for a long sandy beach walk or a beach run.
More locally, East Coast Nature Reserve is about 2.5 km, down the sea road from Newcastle Village. It's a beautiful nature walk with stunning Wicklow mountain and coastal scenery to invigorate the senses. Kilcoole Coastal Nird Reserve and it's Little Tern colony is just a 4km drive.
We have a wonderful 'Country Market' in Newcastle Village on Saturday mornings, well worth a visit for delicious homemade or homegrown provisions.
We have several great eating options in our area. The closest are Romany Stone & Avoca Cafe in Ashford, about 4km. The Castle Inn is a friendly local pub serving good food, in Newcastle, about 3km.
Killoughter beach is 4km from us. It is a pretty stoney beach with a stunning view of WIcklow Head and a wonderful long grassy walk 7km to Wicklow town, a great way to burn off some calories before enjoying a good lunch in the lovely seaside town of Wicklow.
Greystones is a beautiful seaside town is about 7km from us. It has a train station, many great restaurants, bars, shops, a beach walk, the well-known cliff walk, a harbour for sailing fun and much much more. We would highly recommend a visit to The Happy Pear, our local vegan restaurant serving the most delicious, wholesome food in County Wicklow.
Wicklow town is about 7km from us. It has lots of useful shops and several good cafes. There is a lovely short walk around the historical ruins of the Black Castle. A longer but even more spectacular walk (and only for the sure-footed) is the Cliff walk to the old lighthouse, then down the path to the new lighthouse. Along the quays in Wicklow you must not miss a visit to The Fish Man (Alan), it is a delightful shop, selling... well yes, all varieties of fresh fish. Soon he hopes to have a small restaurant attached to the shop which wil be gr-eat! The Fish Man has a great relationship with a local Seal, (Sammy) who can often be seen hanging around in the harbour next to the shop. The Wicklow Sailing Regatta takes place every August and is worth a visit to see the wonderful array of boats before they take off on their races.
We have several world class golf clubs in our area, the nearest being Druid's Glen which is about 4km from us, Glen Mill which is 2km up the hill from us or Blainroe which is about 20 mins drive.
Cycling is a very popular sport in Wicklow. I have huge admiration for those who tackle our big hilly county on a bicycle. Eric's late father was a very keen cyclist and I believe, was one of the founding members of the Wicklow 200. We would be delighted to welcome any of you brave cyclists that are passing through.
For equine sporting folks, we have a roomy backyard where you could park a horse box should you need a place to stay in Wicklow. Unfortunately we don't have any stables.
