Burgas, Bugarska

A small rural village but very close to the festival city of Bourgas with its beaches, restaurants shops bars and street cafe life. The village has small shops and some simple bars but no restaurants. The village cannot be the main focus of your holiday but the surrounding area has everything a holiday can need.

Amazing tour of the ever emerging Roman settlement in Debeltium just outside Burgas. Can be recommended highly even to those not normally interested in history

An independent review of our place and the area.

“We are just back from a great holiday in Bulgaria where we stayed at Allan’s villa in Rudnik. Rudnik is a quiet village a few miles outside of Burgas and close to the airport, and so transfers to and from the airport were a breeze, especially as Allan offered to ferry us there and back at the start and end of our holiday. This was despite having to get out of bed at 3.30am to take us to the airport to return home. The villa itself is close to the countryside if you like walking and watching nature and there are three shops and a bar within 5 minutes walk. All your basic essentials for breakfast and a light tea can be bought from the shops cheaply and the pub sells 500ml bottles of Staropramen lager for 2 lev (£1), which is excellent compared to UK prices. The pub also has an internet café inside which is great to keep the kids amused while you have a quiet pint or two. They charge 1 lev (50p) for an hour on the computers and they have access to a variety of games.

We did not need to hire a car whilst we were there as the bus service to and from Burgas is very frequent and only takes 20 minutes. When we did need a car, such as to go to the supermarket to get groceries and alcohol for the holiday, Allan was kind enough to run us in and bring us back with a full boot load of drink and food.

Burgas is a thriving city which has maintained a lot of its older buildings in the pedestrianised shopping area which leads down to the beach. We found we could browse the shops for hours popping in for a cool refreshment in one of the many bars, and buying lovely meals in the excellent restaurants. If you find the Pizza Palace Restaurant in Burgas, make sure that you have a pizza there. We fed three of us with giant pizza’s, salads, coke’s, water and a bottle of imported Napa Valley Merlot for 66 lev (about £32). Try and do that in the UK!

The beach at Burgas is as nice as the one at Sunny Beach, but quieter, and is lined with lovely restaurants and bars. There is also a promenade that runs along the beach front and next to the gardens that line the beach should you want shade.

We never felt the need to go to Sunny Beach while we were there, but did visit Nesebar, an old Roman town built on an Island connected by a short causeway. This is a wonderful world heritage site where you can wander through the cobbled lanes, pop into bars and restaurants, swim in the sea or do a little shopping whilst visiting the byzantine churches. You may think that prices would be expensive here, but we found a couple of lovely bars selling pints of beer for 1.5 lev (75p). I know I keep referring to the prices, but believe me, this is such a refreshing change when on holiday. We also would recommend visiting the Nesebar Water Park which is huge and well maintained, and at 43 lev (£22) each, a lot less expensive than the ones we have been to elsewhere in Europe. A trip to Nesebar is a must!

The villa is sparkling clean and has everything you need to make your holiday comfortable. The beds are extremely comfortable with good firm mattresses, the rooms are spacious and there is a toilet and shower on every floor. The room at the top of the villa even has a bath, however, as it is in the eaves, tall people may want to choose a bedroom on the lower floors. The lounge has a large screen tv and we were able to watch Netflix at night and the kids were able to use the xbox and playstation consoles. The pool and surrounding outhouses and lounging areas are the real treasure though. It has a big pool where we could swim and relax on the various li-lo’s . We used the bbq and outside dining area several nights and also played table tennis and giant jenga. There really is a lot to do to keep yourself amused whilst lounging around the pool.

Finally, I have to mention our host, Allan, who went out of his way to make our holiday experience as perfect as possible. He was present to help us with advice and support, even giving us the use of his car to go to the gypsy market and the Nesebar water park. He occasionally joined us for a chat and drinks in the evening, and regaled us with great stories, without being intrusive. Allan really personifies what a superhost is and should be. If you decide to visit Burgas for your holiday, I would highly recommend trying to book Allan’s villa in Rudnik. You will not be disappointed!”
