WIFI, CABLE, SECURITY ALARM, GATED PRIVATE PARKING,AC
We have equipped our guest house with the things we miss about home when we travel. The full size stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, washer and dryer are a must. Parking just steps from the door.
The Gate House is so named because there is a rolling security gate which encloses the private parking. The house is about 1,000 square feet. With few rooms it feels much larger. There is lots of storage space and an open feeling in the living room and kitchen. The kitchen has every appliance you will need to do your laundry and make your own meals. You will certainly feel at home. We've stocked everything you will need except groceries and what's in your suitcase. It's time to come home now.
When I was about 5 years old I decided the rules in my home were unacceptable and I was going to run away. My big sister and her friends were loud and wouldn't let me play with them. Mama helped me pack my suitcase. I was leaving and getting my own house with my own rules.
When I got to the street I knew I could not cross. I went back to the house and asked Mama if I could cross the street. She said, "No" and invited me in for milk and cookies. No one left until 1963 when I was 12 years old she died leaving me behind. I am so glad I have such fond memories of her.
We bought the property in 1998. Soon we got to know neighbors who told fond stories of the original owners.
We remodeled the old house in the back for rental property . I loved the history of the house. I often thought about my own story. I wanted the house to be that dream home of peace and quiet and my own rules.
The history of the Gate House is fascinating. It was the original house. It was going to be the servants quarters. The couple moved into the Gate House as soon as it was built and planned on living there while the big house in the front was built. Very soon their dreams were put on hold as War World II broke out and there were no building supplies available.
One disappointment after another kept the young couple from building their dream home.
The lady who owned the house was so friendly and welcoming there was almost always a guest or two. She loved to have guests.
Children were born and eventually the couple raised 5 children in the small home. Then there were college expenses and children left home one by one until eventually the lady was widowed.
In the 1970's a daughter built the big house in the front and took care of her elderly mother who continued to live in the original house.
We have been told story after story about the kind lady who was never bitter about not being able to build the big house. She was a wonderful host and made everyone feel at home in her small house in the back.
One day the daughter suggested she invite her guests to the daughters house in the front as it was larger. The lady declined. You will never guess why. It was because she wanted her own house with her own rules!
The lady lived many years and past away in the 1990's in hospice where she continued to have guests to the very end.
We rented it to college kids and single mothers. But, it never felt right. You see, no one went by my rules. They did not know to appreciate having the peace and quiet the house naturally affords its visitors, not until now.
We have had such a good experience renting to short term guests. They all know they are welcome and they all love the house as it should be!
You will know you are there when you see the bright WELCOME flag flying! The Gate House is on the alley behind our house. It's not as bad as it sounds. In fact people who are well known like the more private entrance. We NEVER tell who is staying or has stayed. After all, we want those folks to come back! Now, if they leave a referral for us that's great!
While there is no yard there is a long ranch porch and there are three parks within walking distance. Gold's Gym , well known for their excellent exercise provisions, private trainers, hot tubs, swimming pools, racket and basketball courts is about 10 minutes away and will accept temporary memberships.

As soon as you book with us I will be welcoming you by text messaging. We have a five star rating because we really care. The house is clean, quiet and ready for you before you come.
I'll ask for a four digit code to put in the door lock. I'll ask about your diet. If you are a vegetarian or need lactaid free milk I really do want to know before you get here.
We respect your privacy. We do not "bother" our guests. You are not pressured to meet us or entertain us. We probably wont meet face to face unless there is a problem.
While The Gate House is on our private property we seldom see our long term guests unless they let us know they are home. We are often out on our private patio where we can hear the guests drive up. We usually invite them to come join us.
When we cook out we often take the guest a plate. We are friendly, and want our guests to feel at home yet we don't have daily interaction with them.
The paved alley entrance to The Gate House is just that, a neighborhood alley. On one hand we wish we had another entrance but on the other hand coming and going is usually private and no one notices when the guest is in or not. The seclusion can be an asset for high profile people. The rolling security gate to the parking area is private, no one parks in the guest spot other than the guest.
We do apologize for the toilet. The house was built in the 1940's. I'm not going to lie to you. The toilet is so close to the tub very large people may want to come see it before they stay. But, like one guest told us, "The edge of the tub is a good place to put your feet up".
We pride ourselves in the quiet neighborhood and do all we can to keep it quiet. It is seldom we hear dogs barking or loud parties. Please help us keep our neighborhood quiet.
There are children and many senior citizens. We behave with respect and with their best interest in mind.
We do not allow pets or smoking inside the house. But, there is a comfortable place on the long ranch porch for smoking.
We don't allow candles to be burned.
We recently hosted a Neighborhood Crime Watch meeting and learned the crime rate is low in our neighborhood. But the crime rate is up in Amarillo.
Until recently we owned a locksmith shop and probably know more than the average citizen about security. We are pretty picky about our security. The gate must be closed and locked at night and when the guest leaves.
Recently we have had a problem in our neighborhood with criminals following the delivery trucks and taking packages off front porches. If I am home when a delivery arrives I take it immediately off the porch and hold it for our guests. But, if you can have your packages delivered to another address I really hope you will do so.
Mail should be addressed to the main house where it will be dropped into a locking mail box. Please drop outgoing mail in a public, drive up mail box at the NW corner at 15th and Georgia.

My husbands name is Steve Stanhope. We attend a local Baptist church. We've been married 46 years come June 19,2016. Where does the time go?
Everyone loves the story of the Gate House.
We live in the historic part of Amarillo. It used to be the "rich neighborhood". What we call the guest house was originally called, "The servants quarters". However, the servants quarters were built first by the original owners who moved into the servants quarters with plans of building a grand home for themselves in the future. World War ll broke out and there were no building supplies. The family stayed in the servants quarters and raised 5 children. In the 1970's a daughter of the owners built a larger home in front of the servants quarters and lived there where she cared for her mother who lived the rest of her life in the servants quarters.
We bought the property in 1998 and redid the servants quarters into what we now call "The Gate House". We live in the larger home in the front.
We recently sold our business , Alpha Lock Amarillo, INC a full service locksmith company. We offered safes and vault sales, service and moving as well. I am president of that company. Now Steve works for VTI Security. He is still a locksmith BUT now he isnt on call 24 hours a day! WHOOPHOOP!
I am a neuromuscular massage therapist who would like to retire. However, after having that business in my home for almost 30 years I have grown close to my clients and hate to let them go. So, I don't. We are like family.
We have three children. Our oldest daughter is married to a pastor in Coffeeville, KS and they have three wonderful children.
Not to be out done our son lives near us in Amarillo and has four wonderful children and a very special wife.
Our third child is a special blessing as she is much younger than the other children. She is 13, a redhead with lots of energy and is a great student who attends a magnet school where she hopes to graduate high school with a college associates degree at the same time. She is a member of the school choir which earned and OUTSTANDING placement in the Greater Southwest Music Festival last year.
We have been renting The Gate House for 3 years through Corporate Housing By and have enjoyed getting to know our guests so much. While we don't see them every day we remember they are with us when I cook a pot of red beans and ham with my home made corn bread, or my husband smokes some meat on the smoker. We don't forget to include them.
We welcome you to our quiet neighborhood.
Like I always say in all our advertisements, "Let us know you are coming. I'll bake you a cake!"
Hotel life got ya down? Let us put ya up.
It's time to come home now.
