Fabulously quirky and fantastically colourful one-bedroom pad sharing large swimming pool and staff in garden estate five minutes drive from Ubud, Bali’s cultural heart.

Prostor

Perfect for a single traveller or a couple, Pondok Lili is a funky one-bedroom home crafted from carved teakwood Joglo panels, stained glass, and hand-made jade-hued tiles. Entered from the estate gardens via a passion-fruit-covered pergola, the open living verandah features a brightly cushioned Howdah elephant chair looking over the garden towards the Merajen (high caste) temple shrine, a cosy breakfast area with Korean bar and eclectic collection of books, and a small, capriciously coloured kitchenette with fridge, microwave and single ring burner.

Within the cute bedroom is a four-poster bed with mosquito netting, an antique dressing table, Provençale iron clothes rack, and a writing desk with lockable drawer. In the funky garden bathroom, the black and white mosaic tiles of the walk-in rain-shower contrast with the river-stone wall dotted with orchids and ferns. There’s also a walk-in wardrobe.

Guests of Rumah Lili enjoy their own courtyard garden furnished with outdoor seating and an original becak (rickshaw). A hop and skip away is a large free-form swimming pool shared with the two other homes in the garden estate and, alongside, a pizza oven and barbecue area. The shared garden is ablaze with Bougainvillaea and Antigonon blooms and planted with medicinal herbs, passion fruit, avocado, jackfruit, rambutan and coffee trees and coconut palms.

Dostupno gostima

Pondok Lili is one of three homes in a beautifully maintained 4,000sqm tropical garden – each oriented for privacy. You will have Pondok Lili to yourself, and enjoy the shared swimming pool, pizza oven/BBQ pit and large parking area.

My wonderful son Nino is on hand to welcome you and help you settle in; when not on site, he’s always contactable by phone. He manages the estate together with Srining, my housekeeper and friend, who is an accomplished cook (she’ll prepare you breakfast) and also coordinates the activities of Wayan (the driver), CongNik (gardener) and Putu and Komang (security/drivers). Srining works from 7am til 3pm six days a week, and the security team is on hand from then til 7am so there is always a member of staff on site. But they are sensitive to your privacy and work quietly behind the scenes; you won’t find them intrusive, but they’ll be around if you need them.

Also sharing the estate is QT, a friendly Maltese terrier, and Laali, a a Bengal cat.

Kućni red

This will be your home-from-home for a short time, and we hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do! You are welcome to smoke in the garden, but please don’t light up within Pondok Lili. In this quiet area, we do have neighbours – something to remember before turning up the volume late at night!

Super cute place with a wonderful staff. The best part of our two week stay was our new friend, Komang. He was our driver, cook and housekeeper. The place is about a 30 minute walk into town, or a 5-10 min drive (depends on traffic). Ubud is a very busy place and lots of traffic and noise. Staying at Janet's place removed the noises of the city and replaced with sounds of nearby chickens and turkeys. The grounds are beautiful and very peacful. Just know that part of the home is outside..which means you will have insects, dust and random cats, dogs showing up. We loved our stay and our new friend.

Janet's place was charming and welcoming. Her staff was incredibly helpful and kind, too. We loved the quirky outdoor shower and patio, the pool was great, and it had the best wifi we have gotten in all of Bali so far. Komang was a wonderful helper and made us delicious banana pancakes or eggs each morning and also offered us transport to explore downtown ubud. We would highly reccommend!!

Wonderful location and wonderful people. The breakfast by Sriling were incredible and delicious. She is a kind and welcoming person- I couldn't have asked for better. The space is beautiful and as described. Great air con, beautiful shower and bathroom and just a fantastic space. It felt like a piece of heaven. I rented a motorbike to get to ubud and around town- a must if staying here.

Positives: Nino, the host's son, is an excellent tour guide who speaks fluent English. For first timers in Bali, this will be useful. They provide airport pickup and dropoff (for a cheap fee), which saves time and hassle. The host also helped me find a gym and got me a cycle. Facilitated all my requirements to the best of their ability, which was much appreciated. The host is friendly, informative, and talkative. The A/C in the cottage is OK. The grounds on which the house is located are attractive and quaint. The pool is nice. Negatives: Internet reception is poor. Notified the host and attempt was made at repair, but there was little if any improvement. The house is really a cottage. The only enclosed section of this cottage is the bedroom. The kitchen, bathroom, and shower, although they are under overhead cover, are actually outdoors and therefore open to mosquitoes. While shaving, cooking, or using the TV, they are feeding off you. It is also difficult to keep mosquitoes out of the bedroom, although it is enclosed, as every time you go into the kitchen or any other place of the abode, mosquitoes enter quickly. Other small inconveniences exist, like the bathroom door, which doesn't stay closed completely and therefore allows mosquitoes. For clarification also, the cottage has no washer as advertised. There is a washing machine of sorts available, but it's manual.....or something. Might as well wash clothes by hand. There is a maid available who cleans your clothes for you, but the challenge with this is that it's on her schedule, not yours, so if you come with just a minimal amount of clothing as I did in order to avoid having checked luggage, this may be an issue. The inside of the room was not cleaned nor trash emptied during my week long stay. Hot water for showers lasts no more than 2 minutes if water is on full force. Please note that it is regrettable that anything negative needs to be submitted, as the hosts are decent people. I don't feel that I was ripped off or cheated. Some of the issues are common on Bali, where you will probably just have to pay more money than this to obtain superior quality due to common infrastructure issues. While food and services are cheap on Bali, as in the Philippines, good lodging is more expensive.

I was disappointed by by your review, Mark.....especially as we went to great lengths to accommodate your extra requests e.g. we tracked down a rare-in-Bali motorbike for you to rent; we introduced you to the local gym; we loaned you an expensive backpack; and my son Nino personally picked you up from the airport, and even drove you around Bali (in my own car) at a fraction of the cost of daily car-and-driver rentals. I would like to respond to your specific comments as follows: Mosquitos: Our guests love the Bali-style indoor/outdoor living offered at Pondok Lili – clearly depicted in the photos and description. Mosquitos are sadly a fact of life anywhere in the tropics. So the bedroom is enclosed and air-conditioned, and the four-posted bed is romantically swathed in mosquito netting. We also provide an electric mosquito device and anti-mosquito spray. Internet: Internet reception is notoriously erratic in Bali, but we have installed our own tower to ensure that our connection is as good as it can be, given we're in a village location; your arrival coincided with a malfunctioning router which we replaced within hours. Washing machine: Unlike many rentals in Ubud, we do have an on-site automatic washing machine so our guests have the choice of doing their own laundry, or sending out to the local laundry which offers a same-day service; as this was important for you, Srining even offered to wash your clothes, which she did nearly every day for you without payment or tip! Cleaning: Pondok Lili is cleaned every day. In your case, Srining respected your firmly-delivered instruction not to go into your bedroom as you wished to take care of that yourself, but she did clean the areas she had access to, the living area and kitchen. She also offered you breakfast every day, which you declined. I do wish you had mentioned your concerns to me during your stay, Mark – I was right next door! Best wishes, Janet

We had a fabulous stay at Janet's! She was such a kind, gracious host and her staff is amazing. They helped us get into town whenever we needed to and Sri's eggs in the morning were delicious! The house in half inside/half outside. We really enjoyed the style and art of the place- colorful and unique. Also we enjoyed visiting Janet's son Nino where he manages Cafe Havana in Ubud center. They have a live band almost every night and salsa dancing- a fun, warm atmosphere with delicious fare.

Thank you for your lovely generous review, Meghan – or very first on airbnb. We all loved having you to stay, and by the time you left, considered you part of our family! So glad you liked our salsa hotspot Cafe Havana too. Plus anyone who likes my pale date cashew cake has found the way to my heart.....come back for more home cooking soon!

We will definitely be back next time we come to stay in Ubud. The arrival was a bit of a let down travelling 24 hours and then having no one to collect us like we arranged. But other than that we absolutely loved it Komang was amazing and really made our stay! Always there to help and make sure we were happy and had everything we needed. Really outstanding. Cant wait to return.
