We enjoyed our stay in the cottage & suite. North Park is beautiful! The neighborhood is welcoming and has fantastic gardens and architecture. We (two couples in our 30s) loved being within walking distance or a $4 Uber ride of North Park's many awesome restaurants and taprooms/bars. The Olympic Cafe, Breakfast Republic, Coin-Op, Fall Brewing, Modern Times, and City Taco were some favorites. We rented a car and found that we could be almost anywhere in the city in 10-15 minutes, so the house made an excellent home base for jaunts to Torrey Pines, La Jolla, Coronado Island, the Border Park near Tijuana and many points in between. Not to mention the Zoo & Balboa Park just down the street! Street parking was never a problem.
The cottage is lovely in Craftsman style as pictured, and is kitted out with a full kitchen & all the appliances you'd need on vacation. The front garden is beautifully kept, great for lounging and reading, and really feels secluded from the street. If the weather had been a little warmer I could have seen us spending a lot of time out there! The bed and living room furniture were clean and comfortable, and the bathroom is really nicely updated.
As another reviewer said, finding the suite was a little tricky upon arrival, although Rick explained it as well as he could in advance via phone. As advertised, it is completely separate from the cottage, accessed via the alley (or through the backyard), and is separated from the cottage by gardens and a third small rental cottage of Rick's that shares the lot. I would describe the suite as having more of a hotel room vibe -- not as luxe as the cottage but clean and a good value for the price considering the location. Note that the bathroom is lofted above the living/sleeping area, and has a half-wall open to the rest of the suite, so be sure you are very comfortable with your roommate! I think the suite would be a solid option for folks who plan to spend all day exploring the city and just need a place to roost at night. We spent most of our time at "home" hanging out at the cottage or on the patio.
Rick was responsive to questions via text. He dropped by the first night and told us a little about the history of the house & furnishings. It's clear how much care & thought he's put into everything. Overall, a well cared for property in a prime location.
