Santiago street is one of the oldest .... (Some local people say is the oldest) street in Madrid ... Inside the Christian fortifications ( you can see them exposed in certain cafes and restaurants around) and next to the even older Arab fortifications... Visible near Almudena cathedral ... Five minutes walk... On the left of the Royal Palace..
Have a look on Internet ... The history around there is interesting...
You hava an interesting bronze maquette of the fortifications on Square Isabel II (Opera subway entrance) at the back of the Opera.
Goya's house is situated at number 6 Calle Santiago ... He had the whole building ....
Velazquez was buried in the church Plaza de Ramales (on the way to the Royal Palace) in a church demolished during French occupation of Spain...you can still see remains of the church there ... they decided to create the square and demolished the church ... I can tell you more about Velasquez and Goya in Madrid if you wish:-)
The Royal Music Conservatoire Reina Sofia also in Ramales square give free concerts at lunch and evenings... or for a very small fee. Programme on Plaza de Ramales in front the Royal Palace.
