Race World Offshore - Offshore Power Boat World Championship Races -

Annually, the World’s best high-performance race teams travel to Key West, FL, the #1 destination around the globe for the World Championship Offshore Power Boat Racing event.

Hand-crafted High-Performance Catamarans and Vee Bottom Race Boats with engine packages up to 3,000 hp take to the world stage with Race World Offshore.

Race World Offshore is the sanctioning body for world’s best offshore boats. The level of inspections is designed to bring a true competitive class to every race. Sportsmanship in the pits, on the course and on the podium sets them apart. Proud to be a part of this growing community.

Offshore powerboat racing is, for all intents and purposes, the aquatic version of off-road automobile racing. There are similarities, such as man and machine versus a demanding environment, and the demands on both simply to survive any given contest. Yet there’s also a key difference: In off-road racing, the course changes from mile to mile or segment to segment. In offshore powerboat racing, the course changes from moment to moment - swell, wind, tide, current, and more make the offshore racecourse perhaps the most dynamic environment in all of motorsports. In an instant, the track can go from docile to hostile.

For the best in domestic offshore racing action, the Super Boat International World Championships in Key West, Fla., are the place to be. The event usually features a three-race - Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday format. What happens during the regular season, even taking a National Championship, means nothing in Key West. Points accumulated during the three races for podium finishes (first, second, and third places), laps completed, and lap times determine the winners in each class.

The RWO Offshore World Championship racecourse is a clockwise course with a total distance of approximately 4.48 miles. The start finish line is in front of the outer mole area and race teams will mill to the north of turn 3 in preparation for race starts. See the Race Course Maps in the photos.

Viewing areas for spectators in Key West are almost unlimited. What’s more, most waterfront establishments (as well as those off the water) in Key West carry Super Boat International’s Livestream from each race, so spectators also can catch the action on television - with play-by-play and color commentary - as the boats roar by them on each lap.

Note: The Offshore Power Boat World Championship Races do not pass by the Hyatt Beach House.

Discovering Old Town Key West -

Slam the car door shut and grab your favorite walking shoes. With its quaint, narrow side streets and bustling traffic, Key West's Old Town, approximately one by 1.25 miles, begs to be explored on foot. Nearly Caribbean, the island is known for its renegade attitudes and good times.

Should you tire of ten-toeing it up and down the historic district's streets, you can rent bikes, surreys and electric cars or hop aboard the sightseeing trolley or Conch Train.

In a car, you would have missed the guy biking down Duval Street with a dog hanging onto his neck piggyback-style. You also would not have heard the dude drumming jazzy rhythms on upside-down plastic paint buckets or have your stomachs growl at the aroma of frying conch fritters.

The heart of Old Town, and at sunset the pulse, Mallory Square turns into a nightly street fair as the sun begins to set. Jimmy Buffett wannabes, fire-eaters, artisans, conch-fritter vendors and sun-tinted tourists converge to get the nightlong party going on.

Walking through Duval Street

When you explore Key West, you'll find most of the action on an eight-block stretch along Duval Street from Mallory Square. Besides the famous and infamous clubs, bars and taverns - Sloppy Joe's, Margaritaville, Captain Tony's, Hog's Breath Saloon and others - that spill their music and frenzied crowd into the street, restaurants funky to fine keep up the momentum for those exploring on foot. Plus, there are some unusual attractions such as Ripley's Believe it or Not!

Side streets off Duval hold still more surprises

The Harry S. Truman Little White House, where presidents from Taft to Clinton have stayed; the former ticket office of Pan Am airlines, now a Caribbean restaurant and micro-brewery restaurant named after Top Gun actress Kelly McGillis; a Bahamian "Conch" village where orange-feathered chickens wander the streets; the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum, devoted to a heritage of wreck salvaging; a factory that sells inexpensive sandals off the assembly line; and corner shops carrying everything from cigars and sponges to thong bikinis and gold doubloons.

Take Front, Greene or Caroline Street to just north of Old Town proper, where the Historic Key West Seaport area presents a salty scene of seafood shacks, boat tours, water sports rentals and specialty shops, and some of the finest restaurants and best happy hours in town. Be sure to visit the A&B Lobster House and Alonzo's Oyster Bar, the Commodore Steak & Lobster House and its Boat House Bar & Grill, the Conch Republic Seafood Company, and, of course, the Schooner Wharf Bar itself and the view from its upper deck at night are a must experience.

Explore Key West's east side along Whitehead Street and you come across some of Key West's most celebrated attractions, including the classic Key West Aquarium, the Ernest Hemingway Home with its six-toed cats and the climbable Key West Lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters Museum. The Blue Heaven Restaurant is an authentic Key West favorite and a must do.

Even the Southernmost Point in the U.S.A. and the island's beaches are within a half-hour's walk from Mallory Square. Stop at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, off Southard Street, for a beach break and history lesson.

Continue to Higgs Beach, the White Street Pier and Smathers Beach, another good place to get into some water sports. Stop in for liquid refreshment at Sun Sun, the beachside, poolside bar at historic Casa Marina, a Waldorf Astoria Resort.

Return along Passover Lane, taking a moment to pay respects and score some chuckles off the quirky headstones at the Old Town Cemetery.

At Eaton Street, you've come full circle. Stroll the residential streets to get an eyeful of the distinctive architectural approach that has come to be known as Key West style, homes built at the turn of last century by shipwrights and crowded by greenery and blossoms as vibrant as the paint jobs. Many of the oldest have been turned into bed-and-breakfasts and inns, including Curry Mansion Inn, Cypress House and Heron House.

Free Duval Loop Hop-On Hop Off Bus -

As an alternative to the walking tour, the free Duval Loop hop-on hop-off bus service runs from the City’s Park and Ride on Grinnell Street, along Caroline Street, right on Simonton Street, around Front Street, up the length of Whitehead, through Truman Waterfront, then returns down the length of Simonton to Fleming. The Duval Loop provides easy access to restaurants, galleries, gift shops and theatres. Check the Duval Loop’s website for a map and for hours of operation.

Some Trivia -

Ernest Hemingway’s Haunts in Key West (Courtesy of the 24 North Hotel) -

Ernest Hemingway’s time in Key West has been well-documented over the years - and best re-lived by Conchs during July’s annual Hemingway Days, as well as tourists in their frequent bar hops. After all, Papa Hemingway called Key West home for almost 10 years, residing in that famous Spanish colonial on Whitehead and fishing off the Florida Straits in Pilar. So, in honor of the writer, here are five spots where he left his mark on the island.

Sloppy Joe’s
o Sloppy Joe’s is the bar that gets all the hype when it comes to Hemingway. Known as his favorite bar during his years in Key West, this is where the writer would drink many a night away. In fact, Hemingway became good friends with the owner, Joe Russell - so much so that Hemingway is credited for the name. However, Sloppy Joe’s is not in the same spot as it was when Hemingway frequented it, which over the years has been a source of contention for fans of the writer.

Captain Tony’s Saloon
o This is where the contention comes in. Although Sloppy Joe’s has stayed in business since the days of Hemingway, it’s hasn’t stayed in the same place. In fact, it’s Captain Tony’s Saloon that now occupies the space where Hemingway used to frequent, which is why many people (and Captain Tony’s) claim that they were the original bar of Hemingway. You’ll just have to visit both to determine which gets the coveted title.

Casa Antigua
o While you may know the Hemingway House and Museum well, you may not be familiar with Hemingway’s first house, located on Simonton Street. Called the “Casa Antigua” this place actually has a lot to do with Hemingway’s love of the island. Back then, the Casa Antigua was a hotel, the Trev-mor Hotel, where the writer and his then-wife stayed while they were waiting for their car to arrive from Cuba. It was in those seven weeks at the hotel that they fell in love with Key West.

o Blue Heaven
Another Hemingway spot - and one that you may not have realized - is Blue Heaven, the Conch breakfast and lunch favorite in Old Town. Although Blue Heaven wasn’t around while Hemingway was alive, the building that houses Blue Heaven was - and it was where Hemingway officiated local boxing matches on Friday nights.

o Hemingway House & Museum
And finally, if you haven’t already been to this grand house in Old Town, you should make it part of your Key West itinerary. This is one Hemingway spot that needs no introduction. When touring the home, make sure to see the gigantic pool out back and pet the Hemingway cats that roam throughout the garden.
