PCI (Property Care International), the agents, leave an information folder in the sideboard drawer for their clients which is just as relevant for our guests - it is quite informative. I would recommend reading it early on in the holiday.
It covers such things as:
Office contact details
Places to Visit
Shopping and Supermarkets
Useful Phone numbers
How to use the washing machine (never quite mastered it myself)
Instructions on equipment in the apartment
And much more
Remote controls light bulbs etc.
There should be spare batteries, light bulbs etc. in the sideboard drawer or cupboard above the cooker extractor.
Keep them with you when you go out. The door self locks behind you. If you do lock yourselves out PCI have a spare set and can be contacted at their office opening times. Usually 9.30 to 1.00 and 4.00 to 7.30 Mon to Sat. Closed Sunday. (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). In an absolute emergency you could try Liz on her mobile (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) but she may not be too happy and the chances are this document will be inside the apartment!
The sliding French windows onto the patio locks from the inside only. Please always lock when not in the apartment.
Note: If arriving in the dark you may want to have a small torch with you as the light switch by the door is not obvious and the door key can be fiddly. (2 keys - one for the outer gate and one for the door behind it)
Oven, Hob, Microwave and Fridge
Whilst the cleaners clean the bathroom, clean furniture, brush round, dust, mop up and make beds between guests staying they do not ‘wash up’ pans, clean ovens, hobs, kitchen cupboards and defrost fridges etc.
We would ask that guests always leave these items of equipment as they would wish to find them, for the next guests.
If you’ve forgotten to take something to read don’t worry, there are loads in the sideboard in the apartment. Feel free to swap any of your books with the ones in the sideboard.
This should be in full working order with CDs (not on a swap basis!) in the drawers in the sideboard.
There is a Sony iPod player so you can take your own music to play. There are adapters in the drawer in the sideboard to allow it be adapted for the different versions that people may have. If you have to change it please revert to the iPod Classic adapter when you leave the apartment.
I have yet to find anything to watch but it was tuned and fully working in April 2013. It does not have Sky and there is no Wi-Fi. There is a DVD player. There are several DVDs in the drawer, however please feel free to take you own. TV remote is the small digital one. To use the DVD, you will need to swap the scart leads and plugs around. Please revert to original configuration after use.
The new built in fridge has an icebox which will need defrosting from time to time. We leave it up to you to make that judgment. We are not yet familiar with all its workings but some instructions will be in the apartment.
The summary on the website (URL HIDDEN) is worth printing off and taking with you as it covers a wide variety (there are a load more). If anyone comes across one they think I should add please let me have the details and when I periodically update the site I can add it.
For those not familiar with the food of the region it is worth saying that the main courses do not tend to come with vegetables and potatoes. The food is good wholesome and simple. It is best to balance the varied starters and main courses to achieve a mix of meat and veg/salad.
Meals tend to be taken much later than in UK. Lunch tends to be 1.30 to 4.00 and evening meals form 8.00 to 11.30 (especially weekends). Children are usually taken even at these later times
The tap water is safe to drink however if you want a decent cup of tea or coffee it's best to use the bottled water that you can get from the supermarket. (Also stops the kettle furring up!)
There should be four outside chairs for the patio though they do sometimes wander. They are marked with the apartment name and number underneath. (2 spares outside the back of the small bedroom)
Fire Blanket & Extinguisher
There is a fire blanket & extinguisher in the cupboard under the sink.
Hot Water - children
The hot water from the tank in the bathroom is very hot and not adjustable -- beware. (Until the tank runs out - then it's very cold!)
Glass window - children
The door to the patio has a net curtains in front of it, however when the shutters are fully open and if you draw the curtains back it is not always obvious to children that there is something there.
There are usually several old beach umbrellas in the ‘well’ by the door. You are welcome to use them.
If needed it lives under a bed in the small bedroom. (Not in outside storage area at back please. Water gets into this area when it rains). If you use the dust buster during your stay, please empty it before departure.
The area just outside the apartment door is OK for storing any large items that are not valuable such as beach lilos, beach chairs etc. There a number of children’s beach play things here for general use. If any become broken or scruffy please just bin them.
If you need to get access to your email, the Arenal Café 100 yards away have Wi-Fi and several PCs for internet use. Should you wish to use it to plan any activities during your stay don’t forget my website at (URL HIDDEN) or if visiting Barcelona and want some info you can find it at my other web site (URL HIDDEN) on the Barcelona or links pages.
There are no telephone facilities at the apartment; however mobile phones work fine on the Spanish network.
If you are staying 2 weeks, the bed linen is changed after the first week.
We have in the past had a barbeque on and off over the years. It is generally frowned upon by some of the other owners. The community rules suggest that they should not be used for fire safety reasons, though some owners do. In view of the rules we have disposed of ours but if guests want to buy one (they are not expensive) and use one during their stay at their discretion it’s OK with us but it must be disposed of at the end of the holiday. Also be aware of the carbon monoxide emitted by smoldering barbeques during and after use. Never leave indoors or in an enclosed space.
Community of Owners
All the owners of the apartments belong to the ‘community of owners of El Coto’ and we are asked to bring to our guest’s attention that we all agree to abide by the rules of the community.
Most are just plain common sense and good manners about not disturbing others. The two most abused are lilos in the swimming pool and children playing football in the gardens of the apartments. There are notices showing it is not allowed but…….. There is land in a shaded area to the left of the apartments for children to play. It usually has a basketball net a table tennis table and plenty of space for ball games.

Carol and I (Richard) have spent many family holidays in this part of Spain. We now tend to use the apartment for long weekends as well, since flying to and from Gerona airport has become so much easier than it used to be. Occasionally we fly via Barcelona if we want to combine the holiday with a visit to this fantastic city.
Our daughters having used the apartment as children now use it for their family holidays.
We live in Halifax, West Yorkshire.
Our time is spent with a mixture of work, family, gardening and watching Rugby League and or Motor Racing.
The apartment is avaialble when we are not using it for others to enjoy the culture, beaches, charming villages and great wining and dining - enjoy.
