The Mountcastle Room in this southern style mansion was built by one of the founding families of Memphis and was restored by their grand-daughter, Martha, your hostess. Rich with stories of days gone by, its bucolic setting preserves its old-world charm. Your private bedroom & bath have views of the lake and includes access to all of the main living and dining areas, and kitchen. The lake is suitable for swimming in the summer, fishing in Fall or Spring and bird-watching in the winter months.

This is my family home, built for my grandparents when they were newlyweds in 1919 by my Great Grandfather, R. Brinkley Snowden of Memphis, Tennessee. I was born at Horseshoe Lake, but grew up in San Francisco. Each summer, my sisters and I would visit my grandparents at the lake for several weeks. Our family has a rich history in this region and, in addition to having restored the home, I take an active interest in its history which I am happy to share with my guests. I also have a passionate interest in sustainable living and have made significant improvements to the home so that, though it is an elegant mansion in the old-world style, I have updated it to make a smaller carbon footprint. The most ecological and frugal improvement I made is to convert the heating and air system to be powered by geothermal energy, using the temperature of the lake water to heat the home in the winter and cool it in the summer. I have also installed floor heating in two of the three bathrooms.
