Long-term guests will love this spacious, sunny English basement with private garden entrance. Main bedroom and bath completely private. We need to use washer and dryer but otherwise, you have private use of living room, office space, guest beds, and 2 cable TVs, WiFi, W/D. Short bus ride to NIH, Navy Med, or Metro to DC. The best fit would be one or two adults but it's big enough to accomodate kids. We are willing to discuss a pet.
We are looking for long-term guests who would enjoy what is, essentially, a large apartment with room for two adults and at least two kids.
The private entrance is in the back yard so you can come and go as you please. In addition, the doors between the basement, the bedroom, and the main house are lockable from the inside. In other words, you really have a large space to call your own.
We've just done some serious upgrading with a new metal door and screen door, cosmetic repairs, a tiled and vented area for occasional cooking, and new exterior lights.
We're looking for long-term guests so tell us what you'd like or need and we'll probably make it work out.
Large firm queen size bed, lots of closet, drawer, and shelf space. Clean private bathroom with shower. Venetian blinds mean total privacy and a nice dark room for sleeping.
We have wireless internet and there are TVs in the bedroom corner cupboard and the living room with a DVD player and cable hookup.
Come out the door and around the corner to a large fully-carpeted living room with fireplace, gym, and foldout sofa. Head the other way and you'll find a full-size washer and dryer. It's a quarter of the house so there's room for children to bounce around and they are welcome to play with our dog and cats (encouraged, in fact.)
Big deck for lounging and just gazing at backyard - a mass of colors in the spring and alive with birds all year around. Wi-Fi extends to the deck if you like to work outside in nice weather.
When you add up the private and shared space, this is equivalent to a large apartment or a small house. We're trying to make it as comfortable as possible and hope you'll give us a try. We've been upgrading and replacing items as we go along and we think it's a great space but are always willing to add something new. Just ask!
Bedroom, bath, and backyard are always yours. There are tables and chairs enough for you to spread out to work or invite someone over for a quiet dinner. There is also a full-size desk in the living room for working at home.
There is a closet filled with shampoo, soap, aspirin, bandaids, kleenex, paper towels, and toilet paper just in case you've run out. A full set of dishes, pots & pans, tableware, and various hot plates and tea kettles are right there if you need them.
Yes, the areas besides the bedroom and bath are shared but the reality is that we make every effort to leave you in peace. We generally only come to use the washing machine and we knock.
The Cleaning Fee is for after you leave but, if you're here long-term, we have a very nice woman who will clean your space, change and wash sheets, etc. for $60 every two weeks. There is a storage room and some other tall closets which we can discuss letting you use.

Terry was a TV news producer for 40 years but is now almost always around since he's writing novels and he LOVES to talk (but really should be writing.) Ann was also in TV News and non-profits and is the sweetest person to chat with if she's out and about.
Most mornings in the warm weather, you'll find us on the back deck, please come and join us. If you need anything or find that something isn't working, please call us or just knock and come upstairs and we will fix it immediately.
We are quite accessible (and, frankly, Terry will talk your ear off) but we've found that what most of our guests really want is privacy and that's what we offer. The space is very well soundproofed so you should sleep like a baby.
There are motion-sensitive exterior lights all around the house--including right over your entrance--so don't worry about stumbling around if you come in late.
Only one car can park in our driveway without blocking another car in so the rule is that only Ann gets to park in the driveway. It's not a crowded neighborhood so there is always street parking right out front.
Extra blankets, sheets, towels, soap, bandaids, aspirin, toilet paper, paper towels etc. are in the four tall cabinets in the hall outside the bedroom. The air conditioning in the house makes the downstairs very cool in the summer so we've supplied small heaters as well as plastic magnetic sheets to cover the air conditioning vents. There is a pullout double bed in the living room and another single mattress with sheets and blankets that works well for a child or a teenager to sleep on the floor.
Take advantage of the personal weight machine in the downstairs living room. Terry should too, but he hasn't. You should have more sense.
No smoking in the house (but it's OK on the deck)
The backyard is fenced in to keep Mike the Wonder-Doodle from wandering off so please be sure to close and latch the gate in the driveway when you come in and out. Mike has learned to check every time someone leaves.
We need to separate trash into:
1: Bottles, Glass, Plastic (small blue bin in driveway)
2. Paper, Cardboard, Mail (large blue bin in driveway)
3. Other Trash. (Gray bin in driveway)
There is a two-stage trash bin in the Laundry area. Trash bags are in the tall cabinets.
There are small plastic frogs near your exterior door and under the laundry tub. Please leave them there--they're dampness alarms.
There are two fire extinguishers in the bedroom closet along with a First Aid kit. The basement is equipped with smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide detector/alarm. If you hear an alarm, just LEAVE THE HOUSE.
Terry Irving has worked as a motorcycle courier, bartender, bouncer, director at two tech startups, Don Imus' video impresario and, for almost 40 years, an award-winning network TV news producer - covering stories from Presidential Elections to War in Beirut to the Tsunami in Indonesia. He can usually understand French, Spanish, and Italian and am quite willing to mangle any other language so long as you're willing to try.
Currently, he's locked in his tiny Home Office trying to write enough thrillers and detective stories to survive. His first novel, "Courier," is a political thriller with lots of motorcycles and was released by a British publisher in 2014. They closed 6 weeks later but Terry denies all responsibility.
Currently, he is publishing Courier through his own company, Ronin Robot Press, and plans to follow it with "Day of the Dragonking," a paranormal/political thriller, "Warrior," the sequel to "Courier," and "Taxi Dancer," the first in a series about a private eye in 1930s Manila.
He is almost always home, typing away in his upstairs office, while his wife, Ann MacFarlane (who was also a TV news producer) really runs the place. We are lucky enough to share the house with Mike, the WonderDoodle and two Balinese cats--Nemo and Miss Daisy. (Ann is very sensitive to allergens and she has no problems with these breeds. They are bred for low dander.)
We like our lives to be relaxed and stress-free and enjoy walking Mike in the enormous open field two blocks away, watching the cats destroy the place, and sleeping in.
