We're delighted that you found the apartment comfortable! Please note that it is incumbent upon all of us to actually read the complete listing before booking. The small size of the 1/2 bath (and of one hallway) were fully disclosed in the listing. Please book for a space that meets your personal needs.
We sent notes by email and had signs posted inviting the guests to promptly notify us of any issues, needs, problems or concerns. We are shocked that you believed you heard gunshots(!!) nearby and didn't even tell us. What about our own safety? Our lives are as valuable as yours and we likely could have been about to walk outside at any time. I am curious about what you believed were "gang symbols spray-painted on building." Uh, I personally wouldn't know a "gang symbol" if I saw one. How do you know that's what you saw? If you had sent me a picture with your concerns, along with the address, I could have and would have promptly investigated the concern with neighborhood officials. Bushwick is famous worldwide for its array of pubic murals, street art, and yes graffiti. Some tourists come here just to look for that, and there are websites and organizations devoted to the street art in Bushwick. These days graffiti is often considered a form of art. It seems that some violent television shows & films have been filmed in neighborhoods in Brooklyn and some people have unfortunate knee-jerk reactions when seeing things and people which resemble what they have seen on TV. (Some people think that every young man wearing a hood is a thug! Not true.) On the other hand, in all fairness, this is NYC and yes there is sometimes violence in NYC -- a fact of life in literally every neighborhood of every borough in NYC, including midtown Manhattan. We have lived on this block for 4 1/2 years and have never, not even once, experienced any violence nor have we ever had concern or been afraid. Many of our bnb guests comment on how friendly our neighbors are to them. Please note that the Airbnb official general description of Bushwick states, in its entirety: "Features: artsy · gritty · latin · hipster · industrial · accessible." This Airbnb description is automatically linked at the end of our listing by their words "Read more about the neighborhood." Again, reading the listing before booking would help to ensure you book for a place that is a good fit for your needs and concerns. A lot of people have zero tolerance for "gritty" or "industrial" for example. We do our best to make our home a no-grit beautiful oasis in the neighborhood, as do many of our close-by neighbors. We provided a detailed personal guest web site with friendly suggestions and recommendations of where to go (and a little of where not to go) around here. If you got adventurous and ventured off the beaten track, I can't say what you might find, but that is a risk we all take when wandering in unknown regions. I have no idea where exactly is "4 blocks north" as our street ends on the north end of our block. (The 2 closest subway stations are 3 blocks to the East and also to the south west) As this guest stated, she did not feel threatened when walking from the subway at night, or presumably at other times. This is Brooklyn. Brooklyn is not like the suburban areas where I grew up. It's always an adventure. And yes, NYC has an edge. But we do not agree that there is reason to feel unsafe here.
BTW, we appreciate some friendly helpful suggestions that the guest made off-line and plan to implement all (such as replacing the large frying pan which seems to have gotten worn out -- we didn't know). If we had gotten the comments during the guests' stay (instead of several days after departure) we could have and would have implemented these things (like replacing the pan) immediately, so that the guest could have benefited. We honestly do our best!
