Part of a property with a long tradition

House and garden in the middle of the historical village centre
Biganzolo belongs to the district of Verbania and is on the west bank of Lago Maggiore in northern Italy, approximately 30 km south of the Swiss border.
This region is well known for its creative arts and wonderful cooking. This small village hidden behind tall trees, is on a quiet side-road about 300 meters from the shore of the lake.
The locality: Verbania and the west bank of Lago Maggiore (Piemont)
The neighbouring town of Intra (also part of the district of Verbania) is situated between the estuaries of two mountain rivers which flow out of a rugged, romantic alpine region. This is the starting point of the VAL GRANDE nature reserve and national park, a place few tourists know about. Those who venture into the park discover abandoned villages, waterfalls, secluded pools where you can bathe in crystal-clear, refreshing mountain streams.
INTRA is well worth visiting and is only a twenty-minute walk or a five-minute drive away. There are numerous shops and boutiques to attract the visitors providing they are not tarrying in one of the cafés or restaurants along the lake side or in the historical town centre. Saturday is market day in Intra with a wide choice of articles on offer, just like the market in Luino.
BIGANZOLO is a village within the district of Verbania. The village and the CASA DEGLI AMICI are about 300 meters away from the lake with no through-traffic and yet only a twenty minute walk from the shopping centre in Intra. When the tourism becomes too much, why not escape to our gardens and discover that peace which completes the holiday experience.
The enchanting LAGO DI MERGOZZO, once part of Lago Maggiore, is only a short distance from Verbania. It has beaches which are suitable for younger and older children as well as the picturesque village Mergozzo.
For golfers there are three golf courses nearby with various levels of difficulty.
“Golfo Borromeo” is the name of a large bay with three islands of which ISOLA BELLA is the most well-known. In the seventeenth century the Dukes of Borromeo built a palace on what was then a naked rock opposite Stresa. It was modelled on the form of a ship and had ten terraces of immaculate gardens forming a complete work of art. Baroque concerts were held and still are in front of this theatrical backdrop. Concerts by international orchestras are often performed in the summer. There were many famous visitors to this island including Goethe and Napoleon.
However you shouldn't forget the picturesque fishing-island of ISOLA DEI PESCATORI. It is very small and easy to walk round. Despite tourism it still has that atmosphere and there are numerous excellent restaurants serving tasty fish fresh from the lake.
In contrast ISOLA MADRE covered with a unique botanical garden that is especially beautiful, and in spring displays an abundance of blossom and variety. With its ancient trees and its lush vegetation it is considered to be one of the oldest and most significant gardens in Italy. There are also many exotic birds which wander around free such as white peacocks, golden pheasants and parrots.
It is possible to visit all three islands in Golfo Borromeo within a day, using the boats of “Navigazione Lago Maggiore” which sail from very harbour in the bay. You should also include a boat trip to the STA. CATERINA DEL SASSO, a striking convent built on a rock just off the east shoreline near Leggiuno.
A 'must' is a trip to LAGO DI ORTA with its famed monastery island San Giulio. Along the way to Orta and soon after Stresa you cross the flanks of the Mottarone with its impressive views from the Swiss Alps to Milan and Monte Rosa.
From the foot of Monte Rosa it takes about an hour to reach Macugnaga, the starting point for high-alpine hiking in the Monte Rosa area. The mountain valleys around Domodossola are also favourite destinations for mountain hikers.
How to travel there:
To get to the Verbania region from the north or north-west (Basel, Zürich, Frankfurt) use the St. Gotthard Tunnel, from the north-east (Nuremburg, Munich) use the St. Bernhard Tunnel. Both of these routes pass Bellinzona (Switzerland) in Tessin. Here take the exit “Bellinzona – Süd” and follow the signs to Locarno and then Brissago thereby driving through the tunnels under Locarno und Ascona. Shortly after Brissago you reach the Italian border. Continue driving south along the west bank of Lago Maggiore for about 28 km (18 miles). About 3 km (approx. 2 miles) after leaving Ghiffa and immediately after the “VERBANIA” sign, there is the hotel RESIDENCE ZUS with a yellow façade. This is followed by a sharp curve and directly after this the road up to BIGANZOLO branches off to the right. After a few curves and bends you pass the church and then a house with blue shutters comes into view. This is the “CASA DEGLI AMICI”. Keep driving up the road, there is a short left bend, 80 m after this is the Piazza Morrone with a public car park. On the left you can see the “VECCHIA SCUDERIA”or house # 7 and the wrought iron gate that is the entrance.
The nearest large city is MILAN which is served by most major airlines. You can hire a car at the airport (Malpensa) and it takes about 40 minutes to drive along the autostrada to Lago Maggiore. There is also an airport shuttle-bus that travels directly to VERBANIA four times daily.
The station in VERBANIA is about 15 km (9 miles) from BIGANZOLO. It is on the line from MILAN to DOMODOSSOLA. It is also possible to reach VERBANIA by boat. Take the train to LOCARNO and it is just a short walk to the quay. This ferry service connects Italy and Switzerland and sails to all the main ports along the lake. There is also a car ferry across the middle of the lake from LAVENO to VERBANIA.
