Yellowknife is one of the best places on the planet and definitely the best place in Canada to see Nature's spectacular phenomena called the "Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights". It occurs all winter long, from mid-December to mid-April and again during the warmer fall season from mid-August to mid-October. Also see the exciting polar phenomena known as the "Midnight Sun", with continuous daylight throughout the summer - May, June and July.

Northern Lights/ Aurora Watch:

Book a tour online with NorthStar, Yellowknife Outdoor, B Dene Adventures + others. Tours tend to take guests out of town and guide them them for the peek aurora times. However it is still possible to see the aurora before and after the tour times.

Otherwise: Check (URL HIDDEN) to see aurora + weather forecasts . The nightly aurora re-play can give you a good idea of what you might expect. You need both good aurora + weather to see the aurora

It needs to be clear and dark to see aurora. October, November, December are often the cloudy months in Yellowknife .
Summer is not aurora time as there are  24 hours of daylight.
You need to have some clear sky as aurora is above the clouds
Aurora season is best from August to mid October
And again from mid-December to mid-April

Aurora is an unpredictable, natural phenomena. It can last one minute or a few hours - It can be very faint or quite bright. Be prepared to stay up all night + sleep much of the day
You will be on the night shift ! Our special aurora breakfast is at 11am for your sleeping convenience. The longest night is Dec 21 during winter equinox - 6pm- 7am. Whereas the shortest nights in April + August are about 9pm- 5am

You are advised to look out the windows of the house every 10 minutes. Better yet, take walks outside around the neighbourhood then come back + warm up. It is better to walk and stay warmer than to stand still for too long and get cold. Bring your warmest gear - long underwear, woolen or feather down clothing. Sometimes we can provide some warmer clothing for a very minimal fee - Parka, pants, boots, mitts, hat, neck warmer

Some of the literature states that the full-moon is not a good time to see aurora. But then there are other people who disagree with this - thats me ! Online you will see good photos of aurora with the full moon in the picture. The aurora is usually not quite as colourful as the photos you see. Photos are more sensitive to colour than the human eye and can be enhanced

Just an example of how difficult it might be to see aurora:
Once a guy came for 5 nights and every night was completely cloudy. Except for 15 minutes the final night when the clouds opened up and luckily there was aurora in the sky at that time
He was watching all night long  so his diligence paid off !
So good luck to you.

Aurora is an unpredictable, natural phenomena. It can last one minute or a few hours - It can be very faint or quite bright. Be prepared to stay up all night + sleep into the day, maybe taking nap in the late afternoon. Another approach is to have one of you be the 'night watchman' for a few hours and then trade with someone else for the next few hours. If you take turns and everyone is has warm clothes ready to go at a moments notice you will have a better chance to see aurora and to get some sleep! When considering how hard to look for aurora, the question to ask yourself is how disappointed with you be if you don't see the aurora before departure?

Respect for others . General friendliness. No smoking. Limited water ( 5 minute showers) and wifi use ( no streaming movies or music). Make sure front door is locked. Go in and out of the house all night to see aurora but just be very quiet ( tiptoe, whisper, don't slam doors) . It seems to work well and we enjoy each other's company.

Our time with Tessa and Mike was delightful. The room was cozy and comfortable and is good for a couple or a couple with a child. It was very cold while we were there and the place was always kept warm and toasty! Tessa's breakfasts were always timely and delicious! She even accommodated my vegetarian diet! Without even asking! The way I see it is that Tessa and Mike are like your cool cousins from Canada (or cool aunt and uncle.) They know the lake, the town, the places and have all the good tips for aurora hunting! They even have a lodge if you really want to go off grid! We spent five nights at the Blue Raven and will spend five more if we find our way back to Yellowknife! Remember, travelling isn't always just about the place, it's about the people.

I really enjoyed my stay at the B&B. It's in a quiet area, a little way from downtown but the walk is lovely. And it is indeed possible to view the aurora from the house (nature permitting). I was lucky enough to see it from the deck and through the bathroom window!

I had a very enjoyable stay with Tessa at The Blue Raven B&B. She responded quickly to my inquiries and made me feel very welcome. She also knew about many activities in town and helped me navigate an unfamiliar place. I would absolutely stay with Tessa again.

After my stay in Yellowknife at Tessa's amazing place, YK has become my favorite town in Canada! Tessa really went above and beyond. I was there during the Aboriginal Day/Summer Soltice holiday so we joined in the Dene and Metis festivities as well as got to experience so many outdoor activities with hours of daylight! The best part though, was hanging out with Tessa and her interesting guests on her beautiful deck. I didn't want to leave!

An ideal location to stay in Yellowknife! Close enough to walk to town, while also away from most light pollution for a good view of night sky & aurora. Hostess, Tessa, is friendly, knowledgeable, and a great cook ... she serves a hearty delicious breakfast (after late night aurora viewing, served conveniently at 11am). Small bedroom/beds & shared bathroom, and a shared spacious comfy living room with a wall of windows and cozy fire in fireplace. Even with taxi transfers from airport ($21/ride), probably the best value in Yellowknife, and a delightful unique local experience(URL HIDDEN)

Tessa's place is perfect for traveling Yellowknife. Delicious breakfast, cozy bed and room, and kind host. House was very clean and comfortable. You don't have to book an aurora trip because you can see the aurora in your room(URL HIDDEN)한국분들 여기 묵으세요! 오로라 투어 신청할 필요없이 집 앞 5분내에서 멋진 오로라를 볼 수 있고, 집주인도 너무 친절하고 관광이 아니라 할머니집에 잠시 들렸다온 느낌이에요.
