Starlight Llama Bed and Breakfast is Massachusetts’ FIRST solar-powered, off-the-grid, bed and breakfast.
We offer a unique option: Breakfast featuring foods from our gardens and eggs from our own hens. We can easily accommodate gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian diets. Enjoy your morning coffee watching llamas graze outside your window, or sit on the gazebo and toss a snack to the peacocks.
Note: Each of our 3 rooms is $115 per room per night. To book more than one room, contact us.
Want your visit to be a blend of nature, culture and excellent food? Want a wonderful night's sleep or a chance to star gaze? Visit Starlight Llama Bed and Breakfast Massachusetts' first solar powered B&B! Completely off-the-grid, our working solar-powered llama farm is just 10 minutes from Smith College and 15 minutes to downtown Northampton. Find directions on our website (URL HIDDEN)
Each of our 3 rooms has a single queen-sized bed, its own private bath, and 2 rooms have their own entrance. Featuring furniture made by your host, John Clapp, these cozy rooms have their own adjustable heat for your comfort. Dee and John used to own an art gallery, and all the rooms have original art made by Western MA artists or those who were shown in the gallery. Some rooms include Dee's art work as well.
Are you looking for a quiet place with a stunning view to finish that novel? Ask us about the Thoreau reproduction cabin, available for daytime use April - September for an extra fee.
Look out your window and see the animals! In addition to the Llamas, our farm includes many rescued animals including a donkey, emus, and peacocks. You are welcome to feed them through the fences or better, sit in the gazebo with a cup of coffee and toss the peacocks a snack. They have free range of the grounds and grace the bed and breakfast with their beauty.
In the evening, come out, look up and see the stars! Two mountains shield us from nearby towns, so without light pollution you can see the Milky Way, listen to the owls, and just maybe, hear coyotes in the distance.
Our delectable vegetarian breakfasts are seasonally-based and feature eggs from our free-range chickens and ingredients from our organic gardens. We can easily accommodate vegan, gluten-free, or low-carb diets. We serve 'family style' and breakfast starts with yogurt, granola and fruit and we invite you to relax with the other guests over coffee or tea while we whip up apple-cider french toast, lemon crepes, baked eggs or some other hot treat. We just added a Keurig in the entryway so you can help yourself to coffee or tea anytime.
Starlight Llama is located on 65 acres; we invite you to hike, snowshoe, cross-country ski, or walk our trails. Want a garden experience? Grab a tool and we will show you where to weed or what to plant. We won't make you clean the barn.
Bring your bike. We ARE where the Northampton Bike Club rides! We are close to Look Park and the Rail Trail (our regional bike trail). We also recommend an easy ride and must-see to Westhampton Center, a quintessential New England town with a white church spire nestled among the Berkshire foothills. There are two outdoor swimming spots just minutes from our driveway, and if you bring your kayak or canoe, we can suggest several places to paddle.
We are a 10 minute drive to downtown Northampton’s wonderful restaurants and attractions which include Smith College Art Museum, music at the Calvin, Iron Horse or the Academy of Music; many art galleries and wonderful stores. Our location makes a wonderful base camp for day trips to the Berkshires, Tanglewood, and MassMOCA. Easthampton is the newest hotspot if you want to enjoy the area's up-and-coming art scene and funky restaurants, and we are in the '5 College' area, and each of the colleges hosts their own art museums, theater, music, and much more. Ask us for ideas on where to explore, shop, sight-see, hike, bike, ski, paddle, eat, and when you are done, take a nap in our hammock.
Starlight Llama Solar B&B is off-the-grid and we do as much as we can to reduce our carbon footprint. We have all the power we need because we practice conservation; we use 100% CFL or LED lights, a gas fridge from Sweden (ok, TINY gas fridge), and room fans. While we do not have enough power for air conditioning, we cool the house as our grandparents did, we open the windows in the evening to capture the cool air then close them and pull the shades in the morning. Plus... our country location is 5 degrees cooler than town. Even in the hottest part of the last two summers, it cooled off at night, and most nights guests reported that they needed to pull on a light blanket.
For the comfort and safety of our guests we are 100% smoke-free in the building and the grounds and we charge a $250 fee if the room or the bed/bedding smells of cigarettes. The internet is available for you to check your email.
Guests are welcome to use the gazebo, walk our 65 acres of trails, and visit our reproduction of Thoreau' famous cabin on their way around the loop. In good weather take a cup of coffee outside to watch the llamas or toss a snack to the peacocks. Anytime, feel free to walk up to the gates and call for the llamas. In inclement weather, we may have to coax them out with some grain. Just ask!

We love Western Massachusetts and are happy to share things to do, places to see, and restaurants to visit. Dee makes great maps!
John loves to share how solar energy works and can give you a brief tour of the panels and the battery bank.
We are a smoke-free, solar-powered B&B. Our rooms have a single queen-sized bed and we welcome children over the age of 12. We care about your dietary concerns, and since we are already vegetarian, we can easily accommodate vegans, gluten-free and dairy-free breakfasts. We have free parking and you are welcome to bring your bikes, kayaks, skis, whatever you need to enjoy the area, we have plenty of outdoor space.
Check-in - typically after 4 pm, check out is 11 am. Let us know if you need an earlier check-in, or if you need to arrive after 11 pm. Sorry, no pets... they upset the llamas and many guests have allergies. Children over 12 or small adults may access a cot, but will be charged $20 extra.
Note, we have 3 rooms available, each for $115 a night. Contact us for help in booking.
I am the co-owner of Starlight Llama Bed & Breakfast which I run with my wife, Dee, who is an artist and teacher. I am recently retired, builder and for many years designed and built houses, and renovated residential and commercial spaces. My particular interest was in creating solar-powered and energy efficient homes. I am proud to have built the first off -grid solar powered home in Northampton MA, which we share with our guests!
Our son is the 6th generation on our family farm, which was run as a dairy and timber farm. When we started to consider the types of animals we would have, we decided on llamas, peacocks and emus, and have since added goats, a donkey, chickens, and guinea hens for integrated pest management. This is a special place and we appreciate it each time we come up the driveway.
Breakfast is an important focal point for guests, and we do our best to make the 'breakfast' part of one's stay special by asking if guests have food allergies or if there are any special concerns. We can easily accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten-or dairy free diets. We start each breakfast with gluten-free granola, yogurt and seasonal fruit, then serve a hot dish that uses fresh foods from our organic gardens or eggs from our hens, who until last summer drew daily interest from local foxes, have free run of the grounds. We love fresh, strong and hot coffee and we always have a selection of herbal and English teas available.
