Fabulous quirky very old crofthouse with a glorious view over Ronas Voe with a view of Ronas Hill, above a stony beach.
Our quirky very old renovated crofthouse has a great view, warm and cosy with peat fires, plenty beds and 2 bathrooms will sleep 9 comfortably. The view from the flower porch is fabulous. Linen and towels included. Great for families and those wanting to explore.
This is a great wee traditional renovated and insulated croft house above the shore at Ronas Voe. Built in the ? 16c no kitchen or toilet until we renovated it in 1994 it used to be our full time home where we brought our children up. There are some of the original bits of furniture still there including Shetland chairs, and a bed which was in the house when we first went there. There are some very low ceilings and doors, and ( smokey) peat fires when its not a flying gale, and the comfort of electric central heating. It has one of the best views on the planet, a beach directly below the house and occasionally otters can be seen. It's also a great place for birdwatchers as arctic terns nest on the beach from May until September, stargazers and to see the Northern lights when they are out, and weather.. We have plenty of that! One of our children James when grown up was on the 'Great British Bake Off' and described his childhood as idyllic, and it is gloriously peaceful there.
And fishing.. If you are after a peaceful fishing holiday, or kayaking, its lovely.
There is a washing machine, gas cooker, dishwasher, two bathrooms, with baths and one electric shower, and beds for 9 comfortably. Two doubles, a triple, a twin and a mezzanine with a futon. There is tons of linen provided. And towels . There is a pulley in the bathroom for drying things. Electric and gas are included. There is a landline, and wifi, and a telly which all work mostly , but being Shetland occasionally don't . We are both working ( me at the surgery, Tom at the bookshop, or writing) but will do our best to help you with things and are available by phone for help and advice and there is a website and(website hidden)page for the house . (website hidden)
You will probably need transport, car or motorbike. ( there is car hire available at both Sumburgh airport and at the ferry).
The house is remote! And thats part of its lovely charm. I would advise a visit to the supermarket on route at Brae, (10 miles )or in Lerwick ( 35 miles), but we have a great wee community shop in Hillswick for a lot of things, including fresh fish, a hotel and cafes nearby. And my husband Tom runs the 'last bookshop' in Hillswick, in our house.
Southhouse has a website, if you (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) it. There are lots of wonderful walks nearby too, and a nice sandy beach in Hillswick. There are a few surprising things to take home too, whether its a nice pebble off the beach, or one of silversmith Esme Wilcocks starfish. Or the pegs at the shop, which will withstand a force ten gale, or one of Tom Mortons books !
Northmavine is an outstanding place of natural beauty, with true wilderness ( the only tundra in Britain). There is the best coastal walking in Shetland here, from the well known cliffs and remote splendour of Eshaness, to the haunting beauty of Fedaland and Uyea. There are many prehistoric sites to be found both in North Mavine and the rest of Shetland and in fact one is just about a mile up the hill from the house. Northmavine also has excellent loch fishing and permits are easily obtained and inexpensive. There are also two very interesting golf courses near to Lerwick, a nine hole and an eighteen hole and one on the island of Whalsay, which is a real challenge.
There is a restaurant locally the Braewick Cafe. and in Hillswick, the historic St Magnus Bay hotel which supplies the best homemade chips north of Frankies fish and chip shop in Brae. There is also the historic Busta House Hotel locally in Brae.
There is a local community shop in Hillswick for food (3 miles), and one in Ollaberry for food and fuel (6 miles). There is a breakdown garage in Ollaberry. Brae has a CO-OP and two garages, one of which does fuel also.
There is a bus service to Lerwick twice in the morning, at 7.30 am and at 10 am except Wednesday and Sunday, returning at 5 pm. ( from Hillswick or Urafirth)
Simon King , the Wildlife Photographer stayed locally in Northmavine in 2009 or some time, whilst filming his Shetland Diaries. The beach below South House known as the Blade is a good place to look out for otters, as well as being a home for Arctic Terns from May until August.
The Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary as featured can be visited locally.
Whole house except the barns. ' Garden' but remember its steep. Direct access down to the beach. You are allowed to walk anywhere in Shetland, but remember to shut gates

I will give you space to enjoy yourselves, but am not far away if you need me, will try and get along and say hello, and usually available, though I work as a busy GP and hospital doctor. My husband Tom, will help too if needed.
You probably need a car. Its difficult by bus. But there are two to Hillswick from Lerwick a day. The nearest bus stop is Urafirth (2 miles)
We will provide most things to get you started , but like any holiday cottage rental we expect you to buy your own toilet paper/ washing up liquid etc if you are there beyond a few days!
It's an old house but needs to be treated with respect, like any old lady. We love guests who treat it well and gently.
It's an absolutely nonsmoking house. Please don't leave it in a mess or I'll charge you extra.
We provide a starter 'pack' of toilet rolls etc, but, please
if you need extra toilet rolls etc during your stay, there is a local shop!
Its Shetland. Its remote. Occasionally things don't work. We do our best to fix things but being Shetland very occasionally it takes a day or two.
There are powercuts in the winter, gales and snow. The weather can be very rough indeed, and so please be prepared. Please dont light fires in Southhouse in a flying gale.
If you have an emergency, or need to phone home , there is a landline, and please dont hesitate to use it!
