Gorgeous lakefront property with large waterfront on Lake Cayuga, only 2-3 miles from downtown. With expansive views of the lake, our 3 story home has a rustic, vintage style with a deck, beautiful hillside gardens, firepit, kayaks, hammocks.
Our rustic, vintage 4-bedroom, 3-bath historic "fishing cabin" was originally built in the mid-1800's. Since the 1920's the house has been expanded to it's 2200 sf size and all modern conveniences added. The kitchen has stainless appliances, laundry room has front loading washer and dryer. The three bathrooms have a shower in each and a clawfoot bathtub in one. The property is private with magnificent oak and hemlock trees. 2 bedrooms have queensize beds, and 2 bedrooms have fullsize beds. The 2 lakeside bedrooms have incredible lake views. We prefer no more than 8 guests since the ecosystem is delicate and the house is our home. We make it available for guests when we are traveling but we prefer small family groups and have a strict NO PARTY rule. The neighborhood is peaceful and family oriented and loud groups are disturbing to neighbors. If you have additional folks in your group there is an additional fee of $40/guest/night.
Our rates can be flexible depending on dates and demand, just contact us.
History of the property:
The magic of the lake views is really indescribable and this makes the overall feeling on the property incredibly peaceful. The main house was originally a cabin built in the mid-1800's by a mayor of Ithaca; and his daughter Belle lived here in the summers until 1922. The cabin was then expanded on over the years, and we have slowly renovated and upgraded the home while trying to retain its historical character. The property reminded us of Deetjen's in Big Sur when we first saw it. It's very rustic with an old-timey "vintage" feel but has all modern amenities.
Guests have access to the entire 2200 sf and over 150 ft of shoreline with a large shale beach, a long dock, picnic table, some floaties and lounge chairs, a firepit and grassy lakefront area, hammocks, as well as kayaks and canoe. At the house there is a large deck with gas grill, lounge chairs, outdoor tables and chairs. Fabulous lake views are everywhere.
The property is large--1.4 acres--and forest-like with many mature magnificent trees. There is also a 2-bedroom cabin up the hill from the main house that is rented separately and is completely separate from the main house with its own parking, entry way, deck, beach, path to beach, etc. You likely will never run into the cabin guests while you are staying in the main house except at the waterfront where the kayaks and canoe are shared.
The owners have a separate section which is not accessible to guests (we rarely stay there when guests are present and our section is completely self contained) and a 3-car garage not available to guests except for protecting garbage and compost from critters: at the end of your stay we ask you to secure the garbage in the side door of the garage.
Guests have access to 3 single kayaks, one double kayak, and one canoe, at their own risk. If using the boats, it is very important to return the boats to their original place, well away from the water and turned over (due to weather, waves, etc.). VERY IMPORTANT: The rowboat at the north end of the waterfront belongs to our neighbor who uses it for exercise and has it set to his specifications--we are not allowed to use it. Thank you for your observance of this.

We love meeting folks who come to enjoy the beauty of the site; but if we are out of town, we don't get to meet everyone on check-in. Occasionally we stay next door in our self-contained owners' section for a night but rarely longer. We are available by text/phone, email or via airbnb messaging if you arrive and have any questions about the house or property at all. We prefer to have great communication with guests so that any questions or concerns can be dealt with on the spot. We also like to know immediately if anything is broken and needs to be fixed to make your and the next guests' stay more comfortable. Texting us is the best way to do this. We hope you enjoy your stay in our home which we have lovingly cared for and expanded over the years.
We don't allow pets or smoking and expect the house and property to be left as our guests found it. Please treat our home as carefully as you would your own home. We do live here all year round except for a short rental period in the summer. Our sewer system is especially delicate, being on a steep hillside on a lake, so NOTHING can go in toilets except toilet paper. This is not a party house--if your wish is to have a large party, there are other lake listings that are better set up for that. The lake neighborhood is quiet and family oriented so no large or loud gatherings are permitted. We like to rent to small family/friends groups who want an environment that is peaceful and beautiful.
LINENS AND CLEANING: Sheets and towels (including beach towels) are included in the rental. A basic cleaning fee of $150 is charged but any additional cleaning costs will be covered from the damage deposit, if necessary. Please leave the house in the condition that you found it and "broom clean" from your own usage.
Please strip all beds before leaving and put only used sheets (no mattress pads, pillows, shams, comforters, blankets--if any of these items is soiled please leave in the laundry room) in the blue laundry bag provided and leave in front of the garage for the laundry pick up. All used towels should be put in the washing machine in the laundry room.
Garbage should be consolidated in large black bags and left in the side door of the garage to protect from critters.
Recycling is mandatory in Tompkins County; please place all recyclables together in the green bins that are in front of the garage or in the shed next to the upper parking area (halfway down the driveway). NO NEED TO SEPARATE ITEMS. Leave excess recyclables next to the green bins in transparent blue plastic bags. Plastic bags for recycling and garbage are in the kitchen bottom drawer.
Returnables can be redeemed at Wegman's or at the returnable outlet at the corner of Taughannock Blvd. and Seneca St.
MUNICIPAL WATER AND SEWER: Although the property receives municipal water and sewer services, the sewer connection is at the street level, which means that all sewage must be pumped up the hillside. The sewage pumping system is relatively new but it is imperative that NOTHING be disposed of in toilets except the toilet paper provided and that grease from cooking be disposed of in the garbage NOT down the sinks or toilets. Thanks for your attention to this.
LARGE GROUPS: It is understood that gatherings of large groups (twice as many as the rental group or larger) are not within the scope of this agreement. The delicacy of the environment requires all guests to be attentive to the sewer limitations, to refrain from smoking, to observe the NO PETS rule, etc., and we find that the more people outside of the rental group that visit the property, the more likely that the property requirements will not be observed.
WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS AND CABLE TV WITH HBO PROVIDED.
NO SMOKING ANYWHERE ON PROPERTY.
NO PETS ALLOWED.
RENTAL IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO THE NUMBER OF GUESTS BOOKED
FIRE PIT, SAUNA, KAYAKS, AND BOATHOUSE: You are welcome to use these amenities at your own risk. The boathouse may be shared with the renter of the cottage and beach south of the boathouse. The fire pit should only be used when there is no wind, as even a small amount of wind blowing in the wrong direction can fill the house or neighbors' houses with smoke. Fire wood is available in boxes in the back of the boat house. Water shoes are needed for walking in the lake (beyond knee-deep) due to the zebra mussels. Life vests and water shoes are in a box in the boathouse.
The lakefront community along the West Shore of Lake Cayuga is quiet and family-oriented; noisy activities and groups may disturb others. Please be considerate of neighbors.

We are a retired couple who lived and worked in Pittsburgh years ago and have also lived in Massachusettes, North Carolina, Buffalo, New York City and now Ithaca, NY. We split our time between our beautiful lake house on Lake Cayuga in Ithaca and our pied a'terre in Pittsburgh. We have 3 children who live in Brooklyn and Washington DC. And 2 grandchildren, so we are often on the road visiting our kids and other family and friends around the country. We love to travel and to support the arts, so we have a lot of wonderful antiques, art and photography that we have collected over the years and now have in our homes. In our careers, I was an editor and a lawyer and Richard was a Theatre Professor, Actor and Director. We enjoy meeting new people and sharing stories, but if we don't get to meet our guests we hope you enjoy staying at our one of our homes!
