Original 600 m2. old colonial house, with pool and large patio.
In the middle of the historic center, World Heritage Unesco.
Less than 5 mins. walking distance of nice restaurants, bars, shops, theater, museum, and the bus terminal (Praia Grande)

Sao Luis in Northeast Brazil, capital of Maranhao State, was the only Brazilian city founded by the French in 1612. Situated on an island with kilometres of fine beaches. It is already a growing Brazilian vacation spot due to its proud colonial history, UNESCO World Heritage status and proximity to unique national parks.

Our beautifully renovated relaxing colonial house complete with swimming pool and all modern amenities is located in Sao Luis, MA on a quiet and safe side street in the heart of the historical Reviver centre in Praia Grande, with its colonial charm and folkloric tradition. My house is not a hotel, or a pousada but instead welcoming home from home accommodation.

The house is 600 square meters and has 8 bed rooms, 3 bath rooms, an open kitchen with a fridge, stove etc., a living room, a big dining room, and a huge veranda.

You will be within less than 3mins walking distance of nice restaurants, daily live music like Samba, MPB, Tambor di Crioula and Reggae or one of the many festivals such as Bumba Meu Boi which is only found in the North/North East of Brazil. It is a 10 min. bus/taxi ride to city beaches such Ponta D'Areia, Ponta do Farol, São Marcos, Olho d’Água & Calhau. There is a great carnival in February, Tambor de Mina after Easter, Forro, MPB, Crioula and the famous Bumba Meu Boi cow festival in June, it is attractive year round for tropical holidays

We are also the closest city to the small town of Barrerinhas, the access point to the 1550 km² unique white powder sand dunes hills and freshwater oasis of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park with nearby coastal villages with activities such as kite surfing, wind surfing. Maranhao also has Brazil's newest national park Chapada das Mesas which has stunning waterfalls perfect for hiking, climbing and swimming and table top mountains.

People are very friendly towards the few tourists and unlike many Brasilian cities, here you will find an authentic and unforgettable experience off the beaten track.

Frank was very accommodating. He ensured a safe pick up for us from the airport and our driver spoke English which was a plus. The neighborhood is scary and lots of which are boarded up but once you're inside you're safe.

It is sad, but not the first time that guests can evaluate Sao Luis, after they arrive after midnight, and leaving the place in the morning at 06:00, without having been outside the house. And I am sorry that not all Brazilians speak English....... :(

Communication with Frank was easy and quick. The room looks bright and airy on the pictures but in reality it's quite dull, dusty and dark. This is two-room suite and the windows (located in the dining/living room) are always closed with the thick shutters so you have only poor electric lightening in the room itself. There is no A/C, only one loud vent which doesn't really help. All the doors were dirty with barely working locks. The house is not easy to find, please communicate with Frank in advance so he provides you the accurate address and basic directions, otherwise your taxi driver won't find it. At this point I would just put 3 stars for this property. Unfortunately, I have to put one due to the location and safety of the place. Frank was travelling, so we didn't meet him, Julcimara was there but she doesn't speak any English so communication was really poor. I asked her for some kind of safe/security box and she told me it was very safe and she was always in the house (with the basic Spanish and gestures). This was the first and the only time we saw her. So if you need help arranging taxi, breakfast, tours, don't count to get any advice unless you speak Portuguese and do everything on the day of the arrival. We checked-in on Saturday morning, and Sunday 5 am we had a transfer to Barreirinhas for a day Dunes tour. We got out from the house 2 minutes before 5 to see if the car was coming, we hadn't locked the door yet. Two guys approached us very quickly and started asking what time was it though no my husband and myself, 28 and 35 years old, had watches on the wrists, clearly they wanted us to take our phones out. Told them "no Portuguese", tried to open the doors and then one grabbed my bag and started pulling it and the second grabbed my husband. Both of them had knifes. We fought back and managed to get trough the door. I was calling for Julcimara but nobody showed up. We didn't loose anything except my husband t-shirt was ripped, and of course shock of what just happened. I blame myself for staying in historic downtown, any guidebook will tell you in Brazil this part of every city is unsafest one for tourist but there is not that much info about Sao Luis and reviews here were way too good. Once it's get dark you cannot really go outside since the street is full with sketchy people who would try to rob you right away. All the restaurants and shops are closed Sat/Sun so get water/beer/etc before it gets dark. Englishmen who stayed at the same time tried to get outside twice but returned both since he was scared and he's been travelling for 6 month around Brazil. All middleclass people live in the other side of the city, so stay safe and choose place there.

Beautifully restored colonial house, highly recommended. I had a large, airy room to myself and was one of only two guests staying at the house at the time--so there was more than plenty of space! Julsimara and her family were very gracious and welcoming. And the house is in the perfect location to explore the Centro Histórico or take a boat out to Alcântara for the day.

For those who want to experience the real life in a historic town centre - this is the place! A very tastefully and eclectically restored colonial house, this accommodation is ideal for those who wish to be within walking distance of all the "must see" sights in Sao Luis - it is also close to the pier for a day trip to Alcantara. Frankie and Patricia were helpful and responsive hosts and one feels very at home in their house. Frankie is very informative regarding the history of the house, life for an ex-pat in Sao Luis and providing really good tips regarding current events. As a guest, you can 'live' the Brazilian life as much as you wish and of course, that goes for the neighbours too. The evening life on the street, the music, neighbours sitting together chatting provides all the local colour you should enjoy BUT if you want to be in bed, asleep by 8:30pm perhaps this is not the place for you. We enjoyed it, did not find it intrusive and despite what some other guests have written (it went on all night) - this was certainly not our experience and we were there at a weekend. We would strongly recommend this accommodation to travellers who want to really understand and feel the settler history of North-East Brazil and at the same time who want to feel part of a local family, who live in a beautifully restored colonial house and who are involved and care about the future development of Sao Luis.

The place is very well located- very close to restaurants and shops. Unfortunately we didn't meet Frank. The stuff is quite nice but doesn't speak a word of english- so better download a dictionary before you stay there. We could't use the pool and there wasn't the possibility to buy something to eat or drink at the casa like it was described. So buy your water in advance ;) Nevertheless, all in all i would definitely recommend staying there!

An excellent house in Sao Luis. Friendly staff, a great kitchen and an overall relaxed and calm atmosphere. I want to return to Sao Luis primarily to be able to stay at Casa Frankie again.
