Hire/rental cars are available at the airport (20kms from the central city), through Apex and Jucy at reasonable rates. Taxi's one way to the city and surrounding areas are about NZ$80 one way - very expensive, however you can also use Uber which is less expensive.
The most economical way to get here is to take the "Super Shuttle" from the airport. It's around NZ$36 for one person or NZ$44 for two persons and is door to door service. They normally have other passengers in the shuttle to drop off so it usually takes longer than a taxi ride. Ask them to quote you a return price journey should you only be staying a short time.
