This is a Beach Front guest suite with 2 large rooms plus a partial kitchen nook(no stove or sink) and bathroom with a shower. Lots of windows open to the deck and water view of Penn Cove. The beach is just outside the door.
We are accepting reservations up to 45 days in advance--Later dates are open and will be available as that time falls within a 45 day reservation window.
Large rustic waterfront bedroom and family room on Whidbey Island near historic Coupeville, Oak Harbor, Fort Ebey State park and Deception Pass State Park and many other beaches. There is a separate entrance to the private first floor guest area. Both rooms have a great view of the water. The family room has a futon and other furnishings, a TV, DVD and VHS player and a library of books, games and some video movies. The bedroom has a TV with DVD & VHS, and 2 queen-size beds. There is also a fold up single cot that brings the sleeping capacity to 7 people. (The cot and futon may be better for kids than adults and can be more comfortable on the floor than on the frames if you want a firmer bed.) There is 3/4 bathroom with a shower. There is a nook off the family area with dishes, a refrigerator, toaster, 1-burner hot plate and pans, microwave, coffee-maker and electric wok, a crock pot, popcorn maker and popcorn. A guest also gave us a Keurig type coffee maker. We have a casserole dish with a glass lid to cook food in the microwave-rather than in plastic. There's not a full kitchen at this time but a beach fire can also be used to cook hot dogs etc. There is no stove and no kitchen sink. Bathroom sink can be used to get water and to fill dish pans for washing. We do have a Nu-Wave oven available by request.
This is an older house with older furnishings, but what makes it special is that it is on the beach. The high tide water laps up on the retaining wall foundation of the house.
During the day, there is a water view of Penn Cove and the Cascade Mountains in the distance. At night the lights of Coupeville shine across the water. On the beach in front of the house, you can enjoy the sunrise on a clear day, take a long walk, or swim. Bring your art supplies, a book, or launch your kayak, or go for a country bike ride. We have two bikes and a paddle-board (for use on our beach only) available to use. The paddle-board is very stable and good for beginners. Paddling around the dock and along the beach at our house is fun and an excellent place to learn. The water in front of our house is usually calm like a lake unless it is windy or there is a storm. Our beach has pebbles and small rocks, driftwood logs, and sea life. When the tide is out there is a sandy area also. There are other more sandy beaches and hiking trails within a few miles.
There are restaurants and grocery stores in Coupeville and Oak Harbor 5 miles drive or a bus ride away.
3 Sisters Market is 2 blocks away and has beef products from their family cattle farm and some other grocery foods and produce from local farms.
There is a free bus on Whidbey Island that stops across the street from the house. It will go all the way to the Mukleteo-Clinton Ferry to the south and Deception Pass to the north. Another bus goes to the Pt Townsend/ Coupeville Ferry. The buses do take a couple bicycles but do not run on Sunday.
There is street parking available in front of the house. Access to the space for rent has 1 flight of stairs. Access to the beach is easy for most people, but might be challenging for someone with limited mobility. There is a cement walkway and large patio area level with the downstairs living area that allows the outdoor enjoyment of the beach without getting down onto the beach. The house and beach are kid friendly, but not childproof for small children.
Summer is a great time to be at the beach, but winter can also be a wonderful time at the beach house. I was there on November 29th, a windy day with bigger waves than the usual. The sun came out for several hours after it rained and the beach was beautiful, with seagulls searching for food, and the high tide lapping at the driftwood.
This house belonged to my Dad, Earle who sadly just passed away in October 2015 at age 96. A year before that he was still fixing and riding tractors and farming 30 acres of flowers (on several parcels of land a few miles from this beach house). Many of our guests enjoyed meeting him. He lived in the upstairs portion of the beach house which may have an extra room available to rent soon. We may be putting the house up for sale in a couple months and will try to have limits on the times it can be shown to prospective buyers to protect our guests privacy. Most of our guests come for only 1-3 days and I think we can try to schedule house viewings between guest visits. If Airbnb guests come for longer stays, we may have to schedule times to show the guest suite during their stay. For now we will continue to offer the guest suite on Airbnb.
Patrick Christianson lives upstairs in the beach house. He moved in a few years ago to help my dad and he helps me maintain and clean the guest suite. He owns a bakery in Oak Harbor and usually sleeps in the evening and gets up very early to go to work about 3 AM. If you have some special requests for baked goods he can bring them home with him in the afternoon.
My name is Vivian and I own The Flower Lady shop in Seattle and work there on weekends. The beach house is a wonderful get away for me midweek for a couple days. I hope you will enjoy your time here too. Vivian
Guests are given a code for the key-less lock to our 1st floor guest suite on the beach.

I work in Seattle on weekends and usually don't meet our guests unless they come for midweek. The guest space is a private space for the guests and we try to respect their privacy--but if the guests are interested, I have given paddle-board lessons and shared stories around a camp fire and time on the beach with them. I also love to play scrabble if I have spare time.
This house is for sale but is not listed or advertised. My Dad had a reverse mortgage and the bank will be taking the house sometime unless someone wants to buy it. That is why we only book reservations for about 1 month in advance so that we will not have to cancell anyone when the bank gives 30 days notice for us to leave. We do showings between airbnb guest visits. But if someone comes for a long time, we may need to schedule a showing during their stay.
Please no smoking, fires, incense, or candles inside the house. Smoking and beach fires are allowed outside. When having a beach fire, please be mindful not to allow sparks to land in the driftwood or to fly up onto the house. There is a bucket for water to put out the fire with.
Please be respectful and considerate. No pot or illegal drugs, or activities. We ask that you leave the space as good as you found it, and then the security deposit will be fully refunded.
NO PETS INSIDE THE HOUSE. If you have a very quiet dog that wouldn't mind being tied up in the front yard and you take care of all cleanup it might be okay. Other quiet caged animals could stay outside, but we prefer that you leave your pets at home.
Children should be supervised by an adult at all times. There are small objects in the games in the house and on the beach that could be dangerous for small children if swallowed.
This house and beach have hazards and we give permission for you to use the beach and property at your own risk. Care must be taken when walking and playing on driftwood logs and and uneven walkways and yard areas. The water is very cold and each person should be a capable swimmer if getting into the water in a boat, paddle board, or on a floatation device or swimming. And if getting out on the water--please stay near shore--not much further out than the dock. Even though the water appears calm and flat most of the time there can be currents. If you are paddling, go initially against the current along the shoreline and then it will be easy to return on the way back. In booking this reservation for use of our property and beach, guests agree to assume full responsibility for their own and their children's actions and enjoyment and hold Vivian Darst, the Estate of Earle Darst, and Beachfront on Penn Cove free from liability in case of an injury or accident on our beach or property or while using boats, kayaks, paddle boards or body boards etc.
I 'm a florist. an artist, and a ski instructor and enjoy hiking, camping, dancing, and being at the beach and in nature. I also practice meditation and like to travel. I grew up visiting my grandmother who lived in a beach house near this house. My Dad, Earle farmed flowers for 82 years and was driving tractors and farming 30 acres of flowers including iris daffodills, narcisus, and sunflowers until age 95. Sadly he passed away last year. This was his beach house on Penn Cove that we are offering to share. It is available to buy from the bank on short sale. I want to buy it myself but not able to so far to get the funds for it. The bank is preparing for foreclosure but we will still have the house for this summer.
