Welcome weary travelers! Need a place to stay for a short while? Share my cozy, quaint (small) home while you are here.
I have a room in my two bedroom, one bath St Clair Shores house. You have the entire upstairs - which has a sitting area, a bedroom, a microwave, coffee maker, and a cold water sink. You are welcome to use the one in the kitchen.
For your comfort, there is a heater and portable air conditioning unit so that you may control the temperature.
My home is about 13 miles outside the city of Detroit. It is advisable that you have transportation, although the bus stop is only six blocks away. I have an old bicycle that you are welcome to take out if you want.
** There are times where I may be out of town and willing to rent the entire house - prices may differ but - please inquire! And I am working to get a Small Grosse Pointe apartment airbnb ready.... Please ASK**
Full house privileges which include a great back yard, kitchen and washer and dryer, shared bathroom.
Wifi is throughout the house.
There is a flat screen in the common (fireplace) room - which has Roku/Netflix/Amazon Prime. The photograph showing the box tube television is several years old.
*** I have recently cut ties with the cable company so there may be limited television reception please take this into consideration and if television is necessary this may not be the place for you. Your room has a 19" flatscreen and an antennae that usually gets 6-10 local channels. The strong wifi should allow you to connect to your Netflix, Amazon Prime or other movies if you bring your laptop :) ****

Most of the time - this is a shared property - but your room is quite private. I want to make my guests comfortable and allow them as much privacy as they desire. If, however, I am available and it is your cup of tea - I LOVE to act as tour guide (urban or suburban) I have been a tour guide for many of the local Detroit organizations and for most of my friends and family all my life.
However, if you prefer to simply explore on your own and have a place to come home too... this is THE place !
Once confirmed, I am happy to email you a .pdf of a Welcome Packet I have put together as long as you provide a valid email to airbnb.com.
The photos were taken by an airbnb approved photographer with a wide angle lens. The house is smaller than it might appear, the furniture may have been rearranged and I have probably changed the bedspread - sometimes it's green, other times it may be brown, once in a while blue. The pictures are accurate - if you take all this into consideration.
**** FULL DISCLOSURE **** You are sharing my home. A well loved, lived in and broken in home. I will ensure that your room is deep cleaned before your arrival. Depending on my work schedule and/or how much notice I have before your reservation - the common areas including the kitchen may not be deep cleaned. There may be dust, I may have forgotten or not had time to vacuum and odds are good it will be cluttered in certain corners. I mention that you are welcome to use my kitchen - as I rarely use it myself - you may need to wash the pots, pans and utensils as they suffer from lack of use. You are not getting the Hilton white glove treatment, nor are you paying for it. My house is your house, it may be "messy" but it is not un-clean. If this is a deal breaker for you - please find other accommodations that better suit us both. Peace.
I am a firm believer in the the golden rule.
Please treat my home as you would your own. You may come and go as you please as long as you remain respectful of others.
I do often work from home. But unless I am on a conference call - this should not affect you at all.
There will be a standard rental agreement upon arrival, and please be prepared to show proper government issued ID.
There is no smoking in the house - but there is an ashtray in the backyard. Please do not leave butts on the ground :-(
I make a damn good bonfire. I love local theater. I am a hasher (hash house harriers) and a postcrosser. I am definitely a couchsurfer. If I was an old soul as a child, I may be going backward... I am a traveler. I have been to Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Belguim, Italy). I have been to Puerto Rico and sailed through the British Virgin Islands, I have been to Hong Kong and Macau, Beijing and Shanghai... I have lived in downtown Detroit (48201), the 'burbs, Palm Springs and Fresno California, Ruidoso, New Mexico and Charleston SC.
Things I love:
Theater, Travel, History, the Hash House Harriers. Postcrossing. Couch Surfing. Extreme Everything.
I don't have One philosophy per se:
Make your life a mission - not an intermission...
Openness to chance rather than planned direction has been my way thus far. And from where I stand, it appears that much of the best may be yet to come.
I think happiness (or the pursuit of) is the key element that drags me out of bed everyday.
I try to practice kindness, curiosity, compassion, risk, and optimistic assumptions, among other things... to create the reality in which I wish to live...
I believe that what we see in others is often but a projection of ourselves.
Money, time or distance are never reasons not to do something you want to do. Life is the experiences you have. Make today count!!!!!
There is no spoon.
Just jump. The rest will take care of itself.
Sometimes the best thing you can do, is sit on the rail and let the waves hit you in the face.
Movies and Books and People and Stuff
I love old movies. Particularly Mitchum. Particularly Noir. His Kind of Woman... Bogart in Casablanca. Depardieu in Una Pura Formalita. I read EVERYTHING.
I enjoy people – all people but preferably open minded, ageless, timeless, world travelers, free-thinkers, who are smart and funny.
Amazing things I have seen or done:
Let's see -- Amazing? Hmmm... I have been to the Great Wall.
I bungy jumped off the Macau Tower.
I met Luciano Pavarotti.
I ran a deli in Detroit.
I have snorkled in Tortola. I swam with the stingrays in Grand Cayman.
I have battled Borgs in Las Vegas.
I have been to the UFO museum in Roswell New Mexico. More than once.
And in Hong Kong - I ate a Vegemite sandwich - to help a team competing in the Hong Kong CityChase (airing on Nat Geo channel in Jan 2008) -- Hope my team won!
Oh yeah I was on a bus in Anchorage on the way to run the Mayors Midnight Sun Marathon - and we had to stop because there was a caribou in the middle of the freeway. Almost missed the start of the marathon! (Yes. 26.2 miles!)
I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland...
And spent Superbowl XLIII Sunday in Pittsburgh PA - Go Steelers!
I got married in Vegas by a disappointingly thin Elvis...
I have taken ghost tours in St. Augustine, FL, Charleston, SC, Savannah GA, and Louisville KY. Pretty much - those ghosts really got around - same stories, different names. :)
I spent a long weekend on an Eastern Iowa tour - I visited the Amana Colonies, The future birthplace of Capt James T Kirk, tried like heck to find a Grape Nehi in Ottumwa, had my picture taken in front of the American Gothic House, watched Field of Dreams from the Outfield of Field of Dreams, saw Barry Manilow in concert and Merle Haggard in a coffee shop.
