Come sleep in storied logs, remember your birthright as one for whom the simple was perfectly enough. Call it your sanctuary, playground, arts space, or hermitage. It's all of these, and whatever else you’d like it to be!

Welcome to Fern Hollow Cabin, a rustic, a historic log cabin in the lush woods of Northeast Iowa. This is the cabin of our great-great-great grandparents, Norwegian immigrants who came here in 1853. We restored it in 1989, and it's really beautiful...a walk into the simple and quiet past. The electricity is made right here, by our solar panels (in cooperation with a bright and reliable star). Our land is a botanical sanctuary with United Plant Savers and is carpeted with native species that are medicinal and beautiful.

The log house is filled with good energy from all the 165 years that people have lived here. It feels good to be connected to our past. It feels good to visit a place where the surfaces are brown, textured, and storied. And it feels good to remember that even without a phone ringing or email calling, you still know how to enjoy the passing of time.

My ancestors didn't have any modern technology; we've added some but not too much. The solar electric system powers the refrigerator and the lights. There is running water and a simple way to heat it up. There's a modern cooking range, which doesn't fit the decor but works swell! There's a special toilet--ask for details if you're curious. If you want to use a computer, you can use a laptop and charge your battery but to get internet you'll need to drive to town. If you want to make a call, you can use the land line up at our house or take a short walk or drive up the hill to use your cell phone. Here you can experience what life was like before the constant ringing and beeping of now.

In other words, it's simple. That's what you're looking for, right? A chance to get away from the clutter of everyday life, and a chance to step into another time: that's what you'll find at Fern Hollow Cabin. It is good.

The cabin is 6 miles from Seed Savers Exchange and right next door to the Pepperfield Project, dedicated to promoting and teaching hands-on cooking, gardening and agrarian life skills. We're 6.5 miles from the beautiful town of Decorah where interesting things in the arts and outdoor activities are happening all the time.

Whether you are alone or with a partner, bringing children or even a dog, we warmly invite you to come and stay for a day or more. Wrap yourself in the songs of the woods.

We Love Kids and Kids Love it Here!

Remember that time you went to an old museum cabin and wished you could stay all day and play? It’s like that, only this time you CAN stay. And not only do you get to read and play games and fall asleep and wake up in enchanted log house; on top of all that there’s the woods for running around, making forts, catching fireflies, picking flowers, and watching fairies.

Just across the little bridge is a tiny log house, a favorite place for the young ones. It’s just far enough away that they feel brave to go there, but you can see them playing from the front yard of the (not-so) Big Log House.

The tree fort, now sitting on stumps on the woods floor because the tree aged and died, is kinda’ modern-art: it’s pentangular, with a sun roof! Three kids can sleep in there easily during camp-outs from the retreat!

We like to sing and dance with children and their families, and if you ask for a family singalong at the cabin you're almost sure to get one!

Plus: swimming in Canoe Creek, campfires, stargazing, birdwatching, and seasonal events like cider pressing, gardening, black walnut gathering, maple syrup boiling, and maypole dancing.

Our girls grew up in the log cabin, and we’ve left some of their favorite books, games, and art supplies down there for other kids to discover. There’s a small loom, marbles, wooden puzzles, homemade Lincoln logs, blocks, a flower press, and more.

We look forward to meeting you!

Composting toilet in an outhouse, not advertised, but referred to and I could have called to find out. I had no problem with it, but another in my party wasn't willing to stay because of it. It was neat and tidy, and there was a chamber pot in the upper level for nighttime use. It was a charming cottage, but if you have allergies or asthma, you might have an issue.

Fern Hallow is a wonderful retreat in a picturesque part of Iowa. The historic cabin is comfortable and cozy. Liz was a fantastic host who welcomed us warmly, and offered suggestions for dining and activities around Decorah. Our stay was during the summer, and the temperature is the cabin was perfect. The home is situated in a valley with a fire pit and walking trails. We would highly recommend this home for your stay!

There are people and places that leave an impression on your heart, and this is one of them. Liz and Daniel and the space/land they have created are delightful, calming, inviting, compassionate and generous. I was looking for a magical place to unplug with my teen son, and this was it. We both loved it, and enjoyed the beautiful home and land. We could explore, play board games, have a fire, watch the moon & stars at night, sip coffee in the morning on the swing outside, and explore during the day. (kayaking - was AWESOME along the Upper Iowa river, Spillville - Clocks Museum, and Decorah) . If you are looking for some magic, to connect with each other and the land around you - this is it!

Fern Hollow is a magic place. We were only there for a few days, but it really gave my family a chance to reconnect with each other. This family's commitment to reducing their footprint is nothing short of astonishing. This place and way of life opened my imagination to other ways of living that I'm trying to integrate into my life at home. The house and its story are beautiful. The rustic amenities really make you slow down and enjoy how lovely simplicity can be. It is thoughtfully appointed in every way for both adults and children. I can't wait to return in other seasons. The wood stove in winter would be so very cozy.

Coming from Los Angeles, we were amazed by the lushness of Fern Hollow - so green and beautiful. This 3 level cabin is prefect for folks who appreciate history - every plank and piece of furniture in the home has a story to tell. Liz and Daniel couldn't have been kinder and my wife & I loved every minute we were there.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to live in a cabin in the wilderness, say, around the turn of the century, this little cabin is perfect for you! It is a peaceful place to visit, learn and experience so many long forgotten pleasures; like a walk in the woods; wildlife up close; nature like you might have not seen before; darkness like you can never experience anywhere else and the quiet of a cabin which is void of almost any moving parts!!! (Except maybe a creaking floor) There is no cell service or Wifi, but there is a little bit of stored solar energy to charge your phone! You need that to enable you to take pictures! You can power a few lights, used sparingly!! The wood stove in the lowest level provided heat to the whole cabin. We stayed on a rainy & chilly weekend in mid-May. We needed a place to sleep while attending my daughter's Luther College Graduation. We had a pretty laid back schedule, so we spent time at the cabin all Saturday afternoon. We purchased some wine, cheese, fruits and meats in town and settled in for hours of board games, reading and napping. When the weather cleared, we discovered the stilts out back and proceeded to spend over an hour trying to master them! The paths in the woods were muddy, but that didn't stop some exploring. The deer stopped nearby to graze and a kitty came for a visit. We read about the history of the cabin; its restoration; and the ancestors who lived in it. This little cabin is truly a labor of love for its owners. They have documented its rebirth in a book, complete with pictures and descriptions. It is a fascinating read. Full disclosure prompts me to also write about the toilet and shower facilities. They are both functional and should not be a detriment to anyone choosing to stay in the cabin. I point it out because we in fact did not use the shower, but chose to shower and get ready at my daughter's dorm in Decorah. The composting toilet is very user friendly and I had no issues using it throughout our 2 night stay. The shower however takes some planning and time if you have multiple people needing to get cleaned up and out the door. The shower uses hot water that you either heat on the wood stove or the gas stove and pour into a 5 gallon bucket. The flip of a switch powers a battery powered pump that pumps your prepared water from the 5 gallon bucket to the shower head. It is a very good system and gets the job done, but for my family, it was too much process to do in a short amount of time. There is also not enough power to run a hairdryer. For us, it was easy and simple to just head to the dorm and spread out in the spacious...

We are homesteaders, 30 years into learning ways to recreate and share one version of a good life. We garden, sing, make maple syrup, walk, preserve food, and try to keep the place up. We love the town of Decorah, 6 miles from where we live, and participate in the ongoing community arts and living events that are ever-sprouting from this happening little town.
