I am a retired college professor, as is my wife. Along with my son and daughter, we have traveled widely and have enjoyed visits with accommodations ranging from hotels and B&Bs to cozy-noisy English pubs, a shoeless Japanese Ryokan, the gatehouse at Wells Cathedral, an earthy 16th C. Spanish farmhouse, and earthiest of all, an Austrian farmhouse with stable adjoining. We especially enjoy having opportunities in such places to interact with local people having special knowledge and feeling for the area where we are staying. Hosting from afar, we try to provide something of that knowledge and feeling to our guests at our summer home in Michigan. This can mean playing the online concierge with information and suggestions acquired from 30+ years with our best friends and 'housemates,' camping, hiking and finally building a house together in the woods adjoining the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
