O ovom smještaju
The perfect hideaway within the Gabo de Gata natural park. Within easy access of small villages that have a wide selection of beaches, restaurants and small bars.
Ideal for walking, cycling, diving or just relaxing off the beaten path.
Your own space in our home: a stunning ‘cortijo’, off the beaten track in Cabo de Gata natural park, with mountain and sea views. El Cortijillo is part of Finca la Capitana, a secluded haven with panoramic views of the coast and surrounding hills, 2 kilometres along a dirt track from the tarmac road, in the heart of the park. You can literally walk out the door and wander through the hills, uninterrupted for hours. And yet the nearest beach is just 10 minutes away by car. A number of small coastal hamlets and a host of sandy beaches and hidden coves are within easy reach – as well as a variety of local restaurants and tapas bars. The small town of San Jose is 15 minutes away by car, with shops and a small supermarket. The colourful village of Rodalquilar, once a thriving gold mine town, is a 20-minute drive. Besides swimming, snorkeling, kayaking or scuba diving on the coastline, the area is ideal for walking, mountain biking, horse riding – or just simply relaxing and connecting with nature. Night-time at the 'cortijo' is breath-takingly beautiful, with no light pollution and a panorama of stars. El Nido consists of a double bedroom, bathroom, kitchen/dining room, and a private terrace with a view up to the hills. The environment provides electricity and hot water through a combination of solar panels and a small wind turbine. The house is simple and modest but has everything you need with a fully equipped kitchen including gas hob and fridge. Access is along a bumpy gravel road, quite passable in an ordinary saloon car if you take it slowly. The nearest neighbours are 2 kilometres away. The owners of the cortijo, an English couple who moved from Kenya to Spain with their two large dogs, live next door in the main house and will be discreetly on hand to help with anything you need. Entry to el Nido is through the shared main door into the cortijo courtyard and then you have your own gate into your own private space. El Nido is a perfect peaceful getaway for a couple who want a unique experience of the Andalucian coast or for people with a sense of adventure who want something 'off the grid'. THE PARK Natural Park status, granted in 1987, has protected this patch of coastline from the development that has spoilt other parts of Spain. It is stunningly scenic, with long sandy beaches and hidden coves reachable only on foot – or by kayak. Turquoise waters, white and black rock formations, volcanic hills, views that in photos look as if they have been taken from a small plane…the landscape evokes Africa combined with Mediterranean coastal and fishing villages. As one of Spain’s rare marine reserves, the area offers superb diving and snorkelling. There are beautiful walks, with breath-taking views of the coast and mountain ranges. Other popular ways to enjoy the scenery are by bicycle or on horseback. A drivable dirt track takes you past the disused gold mine of Rodalquilar and into a Wild West landscape, where three Clint Eastwood films were shot, and to ‘El Cortijo de los Frailes’, the real life setting of the events of Lorca’s famous play ‘Bodas de Sangre’ (Blood Wedding). This is a fabulous area to visit out of season: a paradise for hikers and cyclists, or those who love painting or photography - or simply natural beauty and peace and quiet.

We are an English couple who live in the area. We first came to Rodalquilar in 1983, in the days when it was still just a dirt road through a white-washed village. We have been back many many times since then - and still love it.
Why did we jump at the chance to buy a property here? Because of our history with the village and its people, because, while time has not stood still over the years, Rodalquilar remains unique in an over developed world.
